A 2009 co-captain, Heenan returns for his fifth season after starting in all 12 games for the Flyers in 2008. OhioCollegeFootball.com named him its 2009 FCS Defensive Player of the Year. A crucial element to one of the best defenses in the FCS, Heenan was second on the team in sacks (7) and tackles for loss (12.5) and tallied 50 tackles to lead the defensive line. He also returned a fumble 77 yards against Davidson to record his first collegiate touchdown, and secure the 600th win in Dayton football history. Heenan's performance in 2008 earned him Second Team All-Pioneer Football League honors. He was also named to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Second Team Academic All-America Team. At the conference level, he is a two-time Academic All-PFL selection (first team in 2008, second team in 2007) and is a four-time member of the PFL Academic Honor Roll. His teammates voted him the 2008 recipient of the Emil Karas Most Inspirational Award. Heenan moved to defensive tackle for the 2007 season, after lettering as a linebacker as a sophomore, and came through in a big way. In his first season as a starter, Heenan was tied for second on the team in tackles in the backfield (11.0), and added 7.5 sacks and 51 total tackles. He also blocked one kick and batted down four passes. He was named the 2007 Most Improved Player of the Year for the Flyers as well as earning the honor of ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team. Heenan played in nine games in 2006, and had four tackles. He did not see game action in 2005, but he was named the 2005 Defensive Scout Team Player of the Year.
