Cowan moves into the lineup at starting safety after all but starting last year as UD's nickelback. Depending on the down-and-distance, and the scheme for that game, Cowan played as much if not more than some of Dayton's listed starters. Even as a non-starter, he led UD in interceptions (4) and was sixth in tackles (54). He also broke up two passes. His 3.1 solo tackles per game were third on the team. Cowan also led the Pioneer Football League in punt returns (12.1 yards per return), and was 23rd in the nation last year. He proved his dedication in 2002 when he willed himself back to the practice field days after suffering a broken jaw against Butler on a punt return. Even though the broken jaw ended his season in terms of being available for contact, Cowan showed up for practice with his jaw wired shut within days of the injury, ready to take part in anything the medical staff would clear him for. Cowan redshirted the 2001 season due to injury after seeing action in two varsity games.
