ROBERTS' GAME-WINNING THREE-POINTER LIFTS UD TO A 63-62 COMEBACK WIN OVER MIAMI
Nov. 28, 2007
OXFORD, Ohio - A game-winning three-pointer with 4.2 seconds left in regulation by senior Brian Roberts helped the Dayton Flyers to a 63-62 comeback road win over the Miami RedHawks. Roberts scored 12 of his team-high 20 points in the final 1:04 minutes of regulation as the Flyers improved to 4-1 overall and picked up their first road victory of the season. Dayton also received a career-high 14 point effort from sophomore Kurt Huelsman, 12 points and five boards from freshman Chris Wright and a season-high six points and five rebounds from sophomore London Warren. Dayton had a difficult time stopping the RedHawks' leading scorer, Michael Bramos, who tallied a game-high 36 points on 11-of-17 from the floor and 9-of-15 from three-point range. But with the game on the line, Bramos converted only 1-of-2 free throws with 13 seconds remaining, allowing the Flyers to pull up for the last shot. Roberts drove down the floor on the left side, came off a screen from Huelsman and fired a shot from the top of the key to seal the game. Trailing by as many as 15 points in the second half, the Flyers cut the deficit to one at 59-58 thanks to a fade-away three from senior Jimmy Binnie with 23 seconds remaining in regulation. After two converted free throws by Miami, Roberts added a quick two to keep it a one-point game at 61-60. The key to the Flyers' second half resurgence was a smothering defense. Dayton would slowly claw back into the contest by holding the RedHawks to just one field goal over the next 11 minutes. In the first half the Flyers started off horridly. A team's objective on the road is to quiet the crowd and get off to a hot start, but the Flyers did the exact opposite as Miami jumped out to a 20-2 lead in the first 11 minutes of the game. Dayton had a field goal, two traveling violations and five missed shots to open the game. UD finally got going thanks to a bucket by Huelsman and a three-pointer from Roberts cut the deficit to 20-7. Yet the Flyers could not stop the hot shooting of Bramos from the outside. Bramos scored 25 points in the first half on 8-of-12 shooting from the floor and knocking down 7-of-11 from three-point range. The Flyers ended the half on a 6-0 run behind four points by Warren and a lay-up by Marcus Johnson to claw within 33-18. In the first half of play Dayton shot 30 percent from the floor and hit 1-of-6 attempts from beyond the arc. The Flyers would finish the game shooting 51 percent from the floor and held a 28-21 advantage on the glass. It's the first win at Millett Hall for the Flyers since Dec. 29, 2000. Miami drops to 3-2 overall and the home defeat was their first since losing to Michigan on Dec. 7, 2006. Dayton wraps up the two-game road swing on Saturday, Dec. 1 against the Holy Cross Crusaders at 7 p.m. ET. |
