Christopher Alvarez is one of four returning starters for the Flyers in 2005-06. He played in all 29 games as a freshman, and started 16 of them. He averaged 3.2 points and 3.8 rebounds, and led UD with 18 blocked shots. After averaging 2.6 points a game in the first three months of the season, he took it up to a 4.0 average after February 1. That run began when Alvarez scored a career-high 12 points and added eight rebounds in the Fordham win, when he was matched up against the eventual A-10 Rookie of the Year, Bryant Dunston. Alvarez opened his career by leading Dayton with nine rebounds in the EKU game, becoming the first freshman to lead the Flyers in rebounding in an opener since Ryan Perryman did vs. Howard in 1994. Alvarez was named the winner of the 2004-05 Thomas M. Luppe Award, which is presented each year to the first-year player on the team who best demonstrates the courage, desire and integrity of former Flyer freshman Tom Luppe. Alvarez brings emotion and passion to the game in a fashion that is rarely found in big men. And he took that intensity into the weight room over the summer. Even though he was third on the team in rebounding last year (and second in offensive rebounds), Alvarez had his struggles against bigger, more physical players. He comes back for his sophomore season with 15 pounds of added muscle thanks to his hard work and dedication. He came to UD from powerhouse Blair Academy in Blairstown, New Jersey where he was coached by the legendary Joe Mantegna. As a senior, he was all-state and all-league after averaging 14.3 points and 11.1 rebounds a game. The Miami, Florida, native was team captain and led Blair to a 15-8 record. Blair had four other players who went on to Division I. During his junior year, Blair Academy produced six players who went on to Division I; but Alvarez still saw 20 minutes a game. He averaged 7.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.1 blocks in games, but games were only part of the Chris Alvarez story in 2002-03. Every day in practice, he went up against two McDonald's All-Americas Luol Deng (who played at Duke and then was drafted by the Chicago Bulls) and Charlie Villaneuva (who went to UConn before being drafted by the Toronto Raptors). The team went 25-5 and won the MAPL league championship. Has three brothers-Fernando, Jr. (25), Jose (23) and Michael (22)-and one sister-Nancy Michelle (29).
