FLYERS SHINE IN SUMMER COLLEGIATE BASEBALL LEAGUES
July 26, 2005 Three University of Dayton baseball players have made their mark in summer collegiate baseball leagues in recent weeks by being selected to their league's All-Star game. Luke Trubee and Jeff Mercer played in the All-Star game of the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League while newcomer Dallas Sims was named to an All-Star roster in the Central Illinois Collegiate League. Trubee, a 6-3 right handed pitcher from Xenia, OH, is pitching for the Delaware Cows and threw the sixth inning of the All-Star game on July 17 allowing just one hit and recorded a strikeout in a scoreless inning pitched. Trubee has a 3-0 record with one save and a 2.62 ERA for the Cows while recording 24 strikeouts and walking just eight in 34.1 innings pitched. The 2005 ABCA All-Region and A-10 First Team All-Conference pick will enter his senior season next Spring as the all-time leader in wins at UD with 21 in just three years. Mercer, a 6-1 first baseman/relief pitcher from Bargersville, IN, is playing for the Indianapolis Servants and entered the game as a late replacement finishing 0-for-2. This summer Mercer, who will be a sophomore this Fall, is hitting .255 with five doubles, three home runs, 10 RBI and 16 runs scored. Sims, a 6-4 right handed pitcher from Lincoln Trail JC, is pitching for the East Peoria Scrappers this summer and threw a perfect fifth inning of the CICL All-Star game on July 13 with two strikeouts. Sims is also the current CICL Pitcher of the Week. He earned the award on the strength of eight shutout innings of one-hit baseball pitched in the Scrappers' 5-0 win over Springfield on July 22. In that game, Sims struck out 12 and gave up only one walk, facing only two batters over the minimum for eight innings. Sims is now 3-0 in six starts with a 1.98 ERA. He has fanned 43 in 41 innings and has allowed only a .193 batting average by opponents. Sims will join the Flyers this Fall who are coming off a 36-23 season, which set a new school record for wins as UD made its third-ever trip to the Atlantic 10 Tournament under Head Coach Tony Vittorio. |
