UD looks to continue its hot streak in the second day of the 2005 Atlantic 10 Baseball Championships as it takes on top seed Rhode Island at noon on Thursday. The Flyers earned their first A-10 Tournament victory ever with a comeback from a 5-0 deficit to beat Duquesne in the opening game of the Tourney 8-5 on Wednesday in front of 1,259 fans at Fifth Third Field. Dayton is in the midst of its most successful season ever with a school record 35 wins. It is the third 30-win season under Head Coach Tony Vittorio, all of which have resulted in berths in the A-10 Championships. UD finished second in the A-10 West Division with a school-record 16 conference victories. The Flyers have also won eight of their last nine games overall. Senior catcher Aaron Hepner provided the much needed shot-in-the-arm for the Flyers with a three-run homer down the left field line in the third inning. Hepner, who has started 141 games behind the plate over the past three seasons, has now reached base safely in 38 of 52 games this year with a .273 average, 13 extra base hits, 22 runs scored and 30 RBI. Sophomore Joe McSoley added a three-hit afternoon with two RBI and two runs scored for UD in the comeback. Junior Luke Trubee will get the start on the mound for Dayton Thursday. Trubee leads the A-10 and ranks second nationally with a 12-2 record, which are also the most wins in UD single-season history. The righthander has a 2.51 ERA with 80 strikeouts in 100.1 innings pitched including eight complete games. Every game of the A-10 Baseball Championship will be available on GameTracker at www.atlantic10.org. Also each game can be heard live online, via 1610 Information Radio. |
