UD makes its third-ever trip to the Atlantic 10 Baseball Championships, but this time has the luxury of playing in its hometown as the Tournament will be held at Fifth Third Field, the home of the Dayton Dragons, May 25-28. The fourth-seeded Flyers open up the tournament with fifth-seeded Duquesne in a noon game Wednesday which will begin with a ceremonial first pitch by UD Head Men's Basketball Coach Brian Gregory. Dayton is in the midst of its most successful season ever with a school record 34 wins. It is the third 30-win season under Head Coach Tony Vittorio, all of which have resulted in berths in the A-10 Championships. UD finished second in the A-10 West Division with a school-record 16 conference victories. The Flyers have also won eight of their last nine games overall. Junior Craig Stammen will start the opener on the mound for Dayton. The righty has been at the top of the Flyer rotation throughout the season and boasts an 8-6 record with a 2.60 ERA in 14 starts. He has eight complete games to his credit this year and has struck out 70 batters while walking just 25 in 97.0 innings pitched. He has won seven of his last 10 starts and is holding his opponents to a .250 batting average against him. The middle of the Flyer infield has done more than just turn double plays, they have been a double threat at the top of the lineup. Leadoff batter Michael Massa is second in the A-10 in hits, stolen bases and runs scored while batting .336 with 10 doubles and 23 RBI. Second baseman Galen Schumm is second on the team with a .354 and has 41 runs scored and 39 RBI. Every game of the Atlantic 10 Championships will be available both with GameTracker on www.atlantic10.org and live in the Dayton area and online on 1610 AM Information Radio. |
