DAYTON ENTERS FOURTH A-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS APPEARANCE AS THIRD SEED

Dayton's A-10 Championship Central page Dayton makes its fourth appearance in the Atlantic 10 Baseball Championships this week following a 32-22 regular season, which earned the Flyers the third seed. The Flyers and Colonials will meet for the first time this season in what should be a pitching duel between UD's Luke Trubee and GW's Derrik Lutz. Trubee is 8-6 with a 4.54 ERA this season and is the all-time leader in wins (29) and strikeouts (76) at Dayton. However, He was 5-3 with a 2.59 ERA with five complete game performances in nine A-10 starts. Lutz enters at 6-3 with a 1.46 ERA and 84 strikeouts in just 92.1 innings pitched this season. Overall this season, UD has balanced timely hitting with solid pitching for its fourth 30-win season since 2001 under seventh-year Head Coach Tony Vittorio who enters the A-10 Tournament with a 196-188 record at Dayton. The Flyers are averaging 6.07 runs per game offensively while collecting 114 doubles, which is the second most in program history. UD has also smacked the fifth most triples in a single-season (17) while stealing 71 bases, which is the fourth most in Dayton history. The pitching staff has combined for a 4.84 ERA and enters the postseason just 11 strikeouts shy of a UD single-season record. Dayton is averaging 5.94 strikeouts per game this year while holding its opponents to a .273 batting average. Defensively, UD leads the Atlantic 10 Conference with a .963 fielding percentage. The Flyers have turned 51 double plays in 54 games while recording on error or less in 22 games. Also, the outfield has thrown out eight base runners on the season. |
