UD closes out its regular season with a three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series against Saint Louis. The Flyers and Billikens will play Thursday (2:30 p.m. ET), Friday (Noon ET) and Saturday (Noon ET) at Time Warner Cable Stadium in what could prove to be an A-10 Championships preview. All three games can be followed with Gametracker at www.DaytonFlyers.com. Dayton (30-21, 16-8 A-10) has already clinched one of the six berths in the A-10 postseason while Saint Louis needs just one win this weekend to assure itself of a trip to the Bronx next week. The Flyers enter in third place in the A-10 standings only a half game behind second-place St. Bonaventure and a first round bye in the A-10 Championships. UD also secured its fourth 30-win season since 2001 under seventh-year Head Coach Tony Vittorio. All four 30-win campaigns have resulted in trips to the Atlantic 10 Tournament including last year's 36 wins which broke the school record for victories in a season. Four different Flyers were named Team award winners on Wednesday following a vote taken by the players. Junior Michael Massa was named the Team Most Valuable Player and leads UD with 54 runs scored seven triples and 19 stolen bases while playing every game of the past two seasons as the Flyer's shortstop and leadoff batter. Junior Kyle Lindsay earned the Team Most Valuable Pitcher Award and enters the weekend with a 6-1 record along with a 4.84 ERA in 20 appearances. Since making the move from the bullpen to a starting role earlier in the season, Lindsay has been dominant with 54 strikeouts and just 27 walks in 74.1 innings pitched. Senior Craig Rohren was named UD's Most Improved Player. His improvement at the plate was best shown in a 28-7 victory over IPFW on Apr. 4. Rohren went 5-for-6 with four runs scored and a Flyer single-game record nine RBI against the Mastodons. His dominance on the mound continued this season as Rohren is tied for the UD single-season record with nine saves. He has converted on 30 of 33 save situations over the past three years including 9 of 11 this season. Redshirt freshman Myles Swartzel was picked as the Best Practice Player. He has two hits in four at bats this season while also serving as a bullpen catcher. |
