DUNWOODY POWERS DAYTON OVER DUQUESNE, 13-11 IN SEASON FINALE

DAYTON, Ohio - Scott Dunwoody homered in each of his last two at-bats to lead Dayton past visiting Duquesne, 13-11 in the Atlantic 10 baseball finale on Saturday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Stadium. UD wraps up its season with the fifth-best record in program history at 31-25 overall. Dunwoody doubled his home run total on the season's final day by belting a three-run shot in the seventh inning and a solo blast in the eighth. He finished 3-for-6 with three runs scored and four RBI while throwing out a runner trying to steal second base on a strikeout-throw out double play that ended the game. Max Navalinski closed out a solid weekend against Duquesne with a 2-for-4 effort that including a three-run homer in the first inning, a walk, hit by pitch and four RBI. Overall, Dayton out hit Duquesne 15-10 while taking advantage of three Dukes errors. Kevin Miller closed out his Flyer career by going 2-for-6 with a run scored and two RBI on Senior Day. He finished as Dayton's leader in batting average (.362), on base percentage (.450) and outfield assists (4) on the season. Marshall MacDonald finished 2-for-4 with a double, two walks and three runs scored while Cole Tyrell was 2-for-4 with a double, walk and two runs scored on the afternoon. Senior Ryan Hill earned the win in relief for Dayton after pitching 1.0 innings with no earned runs and two strikeouts. Jake Hoover came on to pick up his second save of the season with a pair of strikeouts while surrendering only one hit and two walks in 1.2 scoreless innings pitched. Alex Dye made his final career start on Senior Day and allowed five earned runs on five hits while striking out four batters in 5.1 innings pitched. He was relieved by Chris Beesley who gave up four runs on three hits with one strikeout in 1.0 inning on the mound. Dayton tallied a 31-25 overall record in 2008 to finish seventh in the 14-team Atlantic 10 Conference. UD posted its fifth 30-win season in program history, which have all come since 2001 under the direction of ninth-year head coach Tony Vittorio. Dayton also became just the second team in NCAA history to be hit by pitch more than 100 times in consecutive seasons as it was plunked a school-record 107 times in 2008. The Flyer pitching staff was also one of the best overall in the nation with a 4.24 ERA that ranked among the top 30 in the nation. |
