May 13, 2006
BRONX, NY - Visiting Dayton rode a seven-run outburst in the fourth inning in an 8-6 win over Fordham on Saturday. With the victory, UD (29-20, 16-7 A-10) clinched a berth in the 2006 Atlantic 10 Championships, ironically at the location of the tournament Fordham's Houlihan Park. The Flyers also moved into second place in the A-10 standings, one game behind Rhode Island and a half game ahead of St. Bonaventure. Dayton and Fordham (22-29, 12-11 A-10) will conclude with the rubber game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. Bryan Chandler provided the big offense for the Flyers with a two-RBI triple down the left field line in the fourth inning rally. Chandler finished 2-for-5 and scored twice. Galen Schumm went 3-for-5 with a run scored as Dayton out hit Fordham 12-8 on the afternoon. Overall, five Flyers has multi-hit games as Bobby Getty, William Benoit and Roberto Ramos each singled twice with two runs scored and two RBI. The offense provided plenty of support for UD starter Luke Trubee who hurled his fifth complete game of the season. Trubee improved to 8-6 on the year after allowing just two earned runs while striking out six batters. He is now 29-13 in the four-year Flyer career with a school record 208 strikeouts. After both pitchers began the game in control through three innings, Dayton exploded for seven runs on seven hits in the fourth. Getty started a string of five straight UD base hits with an infield single off the mitt of the pitcher to leadoff the framc. He then stole second and moved to third on a single down the right field line by Schumm. Chandler followed by smacking a line drive just inside the left field line for two RBI. Benoit followed with the second infield single off the pitcher's glove which allowed Chandler to score from third for a 3-0 lead. Craig Rohren singled on a solid ground ball through the right side of the infield for runners on first and second with no outs. Michael DeLuca laid down a sacrifice bunt which advanced both runners into scoring position. Roberto Ramos took advantage on the next at bat with a single through the right side for an RBI and Dayton was ahead 4-0 with runners on the corners. Kevin Miller followed with an RBI groundout to plate Rohren and Ramos moved to third base. After Michael Massa walked, Ramos scored on a wild pitch and Getty had an RBI bloop single to right centerfield for a 7-0 Flyer lead. Fordham got one back on solo homer off the left field foul pole in the bottom of the fourth, but Dayton came back in the fifth to score an unearned run off of a Ram throwing error. With two outs and a runner on third, DeLuca hit a ground ball to short that was thrown low of first base and the dropped ball allowed DeLuca to reach safely while Chandler scored for third for an 8-1 lead. The Rams scored three unearned runs in the eighth and two more on a homer to left in the ninth, but Trubee settled down to record a ground out and a fly out to right for another complete game performance in an 8-6 Flyer victory. |
