Box Score

AMBLER, PA - Visiting Dayton had its comeback bid fall short in a 9-7 loss on Sunday to Atlantic 10 foe Temple in a critical game for both team's hopes of qualifying for the A-10 Baseball Championships. With the loss, UD fell to 29-23 overall and 11-13 in A-10 action.

The Owls jumped on the Flyers with four runs in the bottom of the first inning only to see Dayton comeback to knot the score at 5-5 midway through the sixth. From there Temple took over with another four-run outburst in the bottom of the sixth and UD could not catch up as TU took two of three games in the weekend set.

Dayton is now in seventh place in the race to make the six-team field at the 2008 Atlantic 10 Baseball Championships with just one conference series remaining this weekend at home against Duquesne. The Flyers trail sixth-place St. Bonaventure in the race, which swept UD earlier this season.

Senior Kevin Miller led the comeback attempt for Dayton with a 3-for-4 day at the plate that included a triple, walk, run scored and three RBI.

Marshall MacDonald and Jacob Spaeth each drove in two runs for the Flyers that also benefited from three runs scored by Shawn Gizynski.

Righthander Alex Dye pitched allowed four runs in the first inning before giving way to Chris Beesley who finished the opening frame and pitched 4.2 innings overall to suffer the loss. Beesley gave up three runs on four hits while walking two and striking out one.

Burny Mitchem tried to keep things close for UD with five strikeouts in 2.2 innings on the mound, but allowed two runs on four hits that were too much for the Flyer offense to overcome.

Dayton will close out the regular season this week with four home games. UD will play host to Eastern Kentucky in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday at 4 p.m. The Flyers will then take on Duquesne in a three-game set on Thursday (3 p.m. ET), Friday (3 p.m. ET) and Saturday (1 p.m. ET).
