FLYERS SINK COLONIALS, 13-4
May 11, 2007
DAYTON, Ohio - Dayton used a pair of five-run rallies to beat George Washington, 13-4 in the opener of an Atlantic 10 baseball series on Friday at Time Warner Cable Stadium. UD (19-29, 9-13 A-10) and GW will resume their series on Senior Day, Saturday at 1 p.m. ET. Six different Flyers had multi-hit performances as UD finished with six extra-base hits on the afternoon. Senior Bobby Getty led the charge with two doubles as part of a 3-for-3 day that included a sacrifice fly, run scored and four RBI. Classmate Joe McSoley went 3-for-4 with a stolen base, two runs scored and two RBI while Frank Tedesco added a pair of doubles with two runs scored and a RBI. Freshman Cole Tyrell collected a pair of singles while stealing a base, scoring a run and driving in three on the afternoon. He was also hit by a pitch as UD increased its season total to 98, which leads the nation in times hit by pitch. Jeff Mercer was also hit by a pitch and finished 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Senior Michael Massa hit his team-leading seventh triple of the season and finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored. He also stole a base in the seventh inning, the 61st of his career, which ties him for the all-time lead at UD. Massa is already the Flyer record holder in runs scored as well as triples and is just eight base hits shy of the career record at Dayton. Righthander Chris Rubio took advantage of the offensive support and improved to 6-6 on the season. The senior allowed just three earned runs on eight hits in his second complete game performance of the season. The visitors opened the scoring with an unearned run following a passed ball and a sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning. Dayton responded with a pair of its own runs in the bottom of the frame. Michael Massa hit the first pitch he saw into right field for a single. He then moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a groundout to short. Bobby Getty sent him home on a sacrifice fly to left field and the score was even at 1-1. Then Jeff Mercer doubled down the right field line and scored as Joe McSoley followed with a RBI single down the left field line to give UD a 2-1 lead. GW knotted the score again in the second on a one-out RBI single by Whitey Wallace, but Dayton regained in the bottom of the third inning. Michael Massa ledoff with a triple into right centerfield. Then after one out, Bobby Getty ripped a single into left field which allowed Massa to score and put the Flyers on top, 3-2. UD added on to its lead in the fifth with a five-run rally that all came with two outs. After the first two batters of the inning were retired in order, Bobby Getty drew a walk and then stole second base. Jeff Mercer hit a single into left field and Getty attempted to score all the way from second base. The throw made it to the plate ahead of the runner, but was dropped by the Colonial catcher and allowed Getty to score an unearned run. From there the flood gates opened for Dayton as Mercer moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on another close play at the plate following a RBI single to left field off the bat of Joe McSoley. McSoley stole second base and scored on a RBI single by Myles Swartzel. Frank Tedesco followed with a double down the left field line, which put runners at second and third for Cole Tyrell. The Flyer freshman drove in the pair on a RBI single to left field as Dayton built a 8-2 advantage. The Colonials got two runs back in the sixth inning, but another five-run rally by the Flyers in the bottom of the seventh inning helped put the game out of reach. Joe McSoley drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by pinch hitter Michael DeLuca. Frank Tedesco drove in the run on his second double of the day to left field. Cole Tyrell followed with a RBI single past the mitt of the first baseman that allowed Tedesco to score from second. Tyrell moved himself into scoring position with a stolen base and then on to third via a wild pitch. Then with Kevin Miller at the plate facing a full count, the GW pitcher threw his second wild pitch of the inning and Tyrell trotted home while Miller took first base. Miller moved on second on another wild pitch and Michael Massa drew a walk, which prompted a trip to the GW bullpen. Following the pitching change, Miller and Massa gave UD runners on second and third with one out after a successful double steal. Scott Dunwoody walked to load the bases and Bobby Getty closed out the game for Dayton with a two-RBI double to right centerfield to give the Flyers a 13-4 victory. |
