Box Score

AMHERST, MA - Visiting Dayton could not benefit from its second consecutive complete-game pitching performance as the Flyers fell to Massachusetts, 3-1 in Atlantic 10 baseball action on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, UD falls to 27-19 overall and 10-10 in A-10 action heading in Sunday's deciding game of the series beginning at Noon ET.

Junior Quinn Haselhorst gave up only three runs on six hits while striking out eight batters in a complete-game effort. Despite posting his second complete-game performance in the last three weeks during conference play, the lefthander fell to 4-2 on the season.

Dayton matched Massachusetts with six hits each, but had just two for extra bases as Jimmy Roesinger led the way with a double and a run scored for Dayton.

Myles Swartzel also doubled while Cole Tyrell extended his hitting streak to a UD season-best 12 games, but the Flyers could not even the score despite having two runners on and no outs in both the sixth and seventh innings.

Senior Kevin Miller reached base three times with a single and a pair of walks for a Flyer offense that drew four bases on balls on the afternoon.

Massachusetts did not have much offense of its own on the day, but it did take advantage of its opportunity for an early lead with two runs in the third inning. The Minutemen used a leadoff homer and a Flyer fielding error to build a 2-0 lead.

Jimmy Roesinger ledoff the fifth inning with a double and then moved to third on a one-out single through the left side of the infield by Kevin Miller. The speedy Miller then beat a double play attempt at second base to keep the inning alive and give Scott Dunwoody an RBI on a ground ball back to the pitcher.

UMass gave itself an insurance run in the sixth when the leadoff batter struck out, but reached base on a wild pitch. After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt, an RBI triple gave the Minutemen some breathing room and a two-run advantage.

Massachusetts would hold off strong threats from Dayton in the sixth and seventh innings as UD could not covert after getting the first two batters of each inning on base in a 3-1 road loss.
