A-10 WINNING STREAK SNAPPED AS BASEBALL FALLS AT RHODE ISLAND, 10-8

KINGSTON, RI - Dayton had its 11-game Atlantic 10 Conference winning streak snapped with a 10-8 loss at Rhode Island on Friday. UD (24-15, 12-4 A-10) and URI (25-9, 10-4 A-10) will resume their series at Bill Beck Field on Saturday at noon. Galen Schumm was 4-for-5 with a home run, two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI to lead the Flyer offense. Michael Massa stretched his hitting streak to 18 consecutive games with an infield single in the fourth inning. He finished 2-for-6 with a solo home run. Josh Burt went 2-for-5 with two RBI while William Benoit was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI as Dayton out hit Rhode Island 17-15. Junior Kyle Lindsay gave up five runs of five hits despite striking out three over 2.1 innings pitched for a no decision. JC transfer Chris Rubio came out of the bullpen for UD and surrendered five runs on 10 hits over 6.0 innings pitched. Rubio suffered the loss and fell to 4-5 on the year. Dayton threatened in the first with runners on second and third and one out, but came away empty in their first trip to the plate. Rhode Island came back to get a run in their first at bat after taking advantage of leadoff single from Daryl Holcomb. The Ram then stole second and moved to third on a fly ball to centerfield. URI then smacked a two-out single up the middle for a 1-0 lead after the first inning. The Flyers evened the score in the top of the second with a rally from the bottom of its lineup. Benoit and Kevin Miller began with inning with a pair of singles. Then Burt laid a bunt that stayed just inside the third base line for an infield single to load the bases. Miller followed with a hard ground ball up the middle that went off the shoulder of the pitcher and over to the second baseman for a double play. Benoit scored on the play however to knot the score at 1-1. UD added another run in the third with a solo homer to right field by Schumm. The second baseman's eighth home run of the season gave the Flyers a 2-1 lead midway through the third inning. Rhode Island came back with four runs on three hits during the third inning to chase Lindsay from the mound. Ryan Cunningham, Josh Nestor and Gregg Allen each had one RBI a piece as the Rams sent eight batters to the plate while building a 5-2 lead. The Flyers rallied to even the score again in the top of the fifth at 5-5. Schumm started the frame with his second double of the game followed by single from Bryan Chandler and a walk by Bobby Getty to load the bases with no outs. Benoit then drew another walk to push home the first run of the inning. After one out, Burt floated a two-RBI single over the head of the second baseman to knot the score at 5-all and move Benoit to third base. Miller then lifted a shallow fly ball to left field and Benoit was thrown out at the plate trying to give Dayton the lead. Despite the ending to the inning, UD scored three runs on just three hits to make it a 5-5 game. An Allen solo home run with two outs pushed URI back on top 6-5 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Massa got the Flyers right back into the game with a home run on the first pitch of the sixth inning. The shortstop's blast over the left field wall was his fifth homer of the season and evened the score at 6-6. Rhode Island took the lead back again in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runs. An RBI double and a sacrifice fly put the Rams ahead 8-6 after six innings. URI added another run in the seventh on a solo shot to left field for a 9-6 advantage. Dayton got one back in the top of the eighth on an RBI single to right field by Joe McSoley, but an inning-ending double play closed the threat for the Flyers down 9-7. Another run from the Rams on a solo home run to left center in the eighth gave URI a 10-7 as UD took its last trip to the plate. Chandler raked a double into the right field corner to start off the ninth inning for Dayton. Then after URI made a trip to the bullpen, Getty laced a single up the middle to put runners on the corners with no outs. One out later, Rohren lifted an RBI double to left centerfield as Chandler scored and Benoit moved to third base. After a strikeout sent Miller to the plate with two outs, the sophomore was hit by a pitch to load the bases. However another pop out behind home plate ended the Dayton rally in a 10-8 defeat. |
