BASEBALL SPLITS CLOSELY CONTESTED DOUBLEHEADER AT La SALLE

PHILADELPHIA - Dayton's offense came to life in the second game of an Atlantic 10 doublheader Saturday to support a stellar pitching performance as Dayton beat La Salle, 4-1 at Hank DeVincent Field. The win lifted Dayton to 21-13 overall and 8-3 in the A-10 while La Salle fell to 13-19, 6-5 A-10. Seven Flyers had one hit each in the finale. Michael Massa provided the game-winning hit with a two-RBI double and a run scored as part of a 1-for-3 performance. Roberto Ramos, Craig Rohren and Aaron Hepner each singled a scored for Dayton. Galen Schumm also singled and added an RBI while Joe McSoley and William Benoit each had one base hit. Junior Luke Trubee moved into third place on Dayton's all-time career win list with a complete game victory. He now holds a 17-5 career record after matching last season's win total with his eighth victory of the year. Trubee fanned eight batters Saturday and did not surrender an earned run on four hits. The Explorers got on the board first with an unearned run in the second to take a 1-0 advantage. After a groundout to begin the inning the next La Salle batter ripped a double off the left centerfield wall. The runner then advanced to third on errant throw on a pickoff attempt. An RBI single up the middle followed to put the Explorers up by a run at the end of the second inning. Dayton broke a 20-inning stretch without a run scored with four runs in the top of the fifth inning. UD began the rally with a pinch hit single by Ramos. Rohren and Hepner repeated the feat to load the bases for Massa with one out. The sophomore smacked a double off the left centerfield wall. He earned two-RBI on the play and Hepner made his way to the plate after an errant throw to give Dayton a 3-1 lead. Schumm followed with an RBI single to left center and put the Flyers ahead 4-1 midway through the fifth frame. The Flyers and Explorers will play the rubber game of the series Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Hank DeVincent Field. |
