FLYERS CLIPPED BY La SALLE, 1-0 IN SERIES OPENER
April 16, 2005
PHILADELPHIA - A strong pitching performance by Craig Stammen was not enough as Dayton fell to La Salle, 1-0 in the opener of Saturday's A-10 doubleheader at Hank DeVincent Field. UD fell to 20-13 overall and 7-3 in A-10 play after being shutout for the second consecutive game. La Salle improved to 13-18, 6-4 A-10. Stammen surrendered just one unearned run on four hits in a complete game performance despite falling to 5-5 on the year. The junior righthander also struck out three La Salle batters on the afternoon. Despite out hitting the Explorers 5-4, the Flyers could not scratch a run on the board. Galen Schumm reached base a team-high three times as he singled and walked twice while also recording his second stolen base of the season. Bobby Getty, Brandon Godzik, Bryan Chandler and Craig Rohren each singled once for Dayton which matched its season low for hits as a team. La Salle took advantage of a UD fielding error in the fifth to plate the only run of the game. As the leadoff batter hit an infield single, an errant throw got past first base and put a runner on second with no outs. After a groundout advanced the runner to third, an RBI single to center gave the Explorers all the offense they would need to come away with a 1-0 victory. |
