FLYERS SUFFER 5-4 LOSS TO URBANA
April 14, 2008
XENIA, Ohio - An unearned run in the top of the seventh inning proved to be the difference as Dayton fell to Urbana, 5-4 in non-conference baseball action at Athletes in Action Field on Monday night. The loss drops UD to 18-16 overall this season. The Flyers were held to just five hits while making three errors in the field on the evening. Redshirt freshman Jonathan Castine led the Dayton offense with a two-RBI single in the second inning to give the Flyers an early lead. True freshman Jimmy Roesinger walked, scored once and drove in another run for a UD offense that stranded nine runners on base throughout the game. Classmate Willy Balbach allowed four runs on five hits in a no decision after getting the start on the mound for Dayton. He struck out two and walked four in 5.2 innings pitched. Fellow freshman Tim Corbey suffered the loss after giving up just one unearned run on one hit with one strikeout in 1.1 innings pitched. Sophomore Matt Speckman closed out the game on the hill for UD and fanned three batters while surrendering only one hit in 2.0 scoreless innings pitched. Urbana took advantage of two walks to open the game to score a solo run in the top of the first inning. However, Dayton would dig its way out of the hole in the second inning beginning with a leadoff walk of its own by Myles Swartzel. Max Navalinski followed with an infield single and Ryan Nevill laid down a sacrifice bunt to give the Flyers runners on second and third with one out. Jonathan Castine took advantage by ripping a line drive up the middle for two RBI and a 2-1 UD lead. The Flyers added another run in the fifth beginning with a leadoff walk by Jimmy Roesinger. The freshman then stole second and advanced to third when the throw from the catcher made its way into centerfield. After Jacob Spaeth was hit by a pitch, Scott Dunwoody lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to put Dayton on top, 3-1. Urbana took the lead back on a three run homer to left field in the top of the sixth only to see the game knotted at 4-all with a Dayton rally in the bottom of the frame. Ryan Nevill drew a four pitch walk to start the inning and after a pitching change Jonathan Castine did the same thing to put two men on base. A sacrifice bunt moved the pair to second and third before Jimmy Roesinger hit a ground ball to the second baseman that allowed Nevill to score from third to make it a 4-4 score. A leadoff throwing error by Dayton led to a base runner that would move to second on a sacrifice bunt. Another dropped pop up allowed a second runner to reach base to setup a RBI single to centerfield that allowed Urbana to escape with a 5-4 victory. Dayton returns home to play host to Wright State on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET. Fans can follow the Flyers and Raiders live with Gametracker at www.DaytonFlyers.com. |
