CARDINALS SLIDE PAST FLYERS, 1-0
April 13, 2005
MUNCIE, Ind. - On a blustery day at Ball Diamond Wednesday, Ball State slipped past visiting Dayton, 1-0 in non-conference baseball action. UD used five pitchers on the day that combined to allow just one run on 11 hits. Junior Luke Trubee started the day on the mound. He threw two scoreless innings while allowing just three hits. Trubee gave way to sophomore Kyle Lindsay who surrendered three hits in two scoreless innings pitched while recording one strikeout. Junior righty Craig Stammen came on in the fifth and gave up the only Cardinal run of the game. He did strikeout three while allowing a pair of hits in two innings of work. Senior Drew Chesebro followed with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief as he scattered three hits and was one of five Flyer pitchers who did not surrender a walk. Sophomore Phil Ernst closed out the afternoon on the mound for UD and struck out a batter in 2/3 of an inning pitched. Dayton had just six hits on the day led by a pair of singles each by Brandon Godzik and William Benoit. Michael Massa and Aaron Hepner also singled once each for the Flyers. The Cardinals broke through a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth as a one-out single followed by a two-out double to right put Ball State ahead 1-0. UD mounted a late rally with a pair of infield singles in the ninth, but a ground out to second just beat out the Flyer batter to first base as Dayton was shutout for the first time this season. Dayton remains on the road this weekend as the Flyers travel to Philadelphia for a three-game Atlantic 10 series with La Salle. UD and the Explorers will play a doubleheader Saturday to begin the action. The teams will then wrap up play with a nine-inning contest Sunday at 1 p.m. |
