DAYTON EXPLODES FOR 28-7 WIN AT IPFW
April 4, 2006
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Craig Rohren posted a career-high nine RBI as Dayton beat IPFW, 28-7 on Tuesday in non-conference action at Mastodons Field. The win was the fourth in the last five games for the Flyers which improved to 13-12 overall this season entering a three-game series at Richmond this weekend. Rohren finished 5-for-6 with a double, home run and four runs scored on a Mastodons' Field that featured 35 MPH winds. The senior entered the game with three RBI this season and 16 during his Flyer career before a nine-RBI outburst on Tuesday. His nine RBI in a single game are the most by any Flyer dating back at least to the 2000 season. Bobby Getty and Michael DeLuca drove in three runs apiece to lead a group of four Flyers with multi-RBI games. Getty was 3-for-6 with two doubles and four runs scored. DeLuca finished 1-for-3. Josh Burt was 3-for-8 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI as one of four Dayton players with at least three hits. Bryan Chandler finished 3-for-5 with a double, four runs scored and one RBI for the Flyers which out hit the Mastodons 25-10 overall. Included in the offense was the first collegiate hit and RBI for both Myles Swartzel and Quinn Haselhorst. Junior Jordan Gaietto improved to 3-0 as a Flyer after giving up just two earned runs over 5.2 innings pitched. The right hander struck out five while surrendering just six hits and two walks on the day. Classmate Cale Ort came out of the bullpen in the sixth inning to throw 1.1 innings against the Mastodons. The southpaw allowed two runs on three hits while striking out a pair of batters. JC transfer Chris Rubio threw one inning in relief and gave up one run on one hit while facing six batters. Freshman Sean Finn finished the day on the mound with a pair of strikeouts in the ninth inning. Dayton took advantage of the windy conditions in the top of the first inning with five runs on four hits and one IPFW error. Michael Massa led off the game with a home run to right field on the second pitch he saw. After one out, Getty ripped a double to centerfield followed by a Chandler walk and a single through the left side by Benoit to load the bases. The Flyers then peppered the left side of the infield with two straight RBI ground balls by Rohren and DeLuca to keep the bases loaded with two outs for Burt. The senior catcher smacked another ground ball to third base and reached safely on an errant throw that allowed two more runners to score for a 5-0 Flyer lead. UD added two more in the second on a sacrifice fly from Benoit and an RBI single by Rohren for a 7-0 advantage. IPFW got on the board with two of its own in the bottom of the second inning, but Dayton came back with another seven runs in the third on five hits as 12 Flyers came to the plate in the top of the third. Getty had the big hit of the frame with a bases-clearing double into the left field corner for three RBI to get things started. Rohren collected two more RBI on a single through the left side while Burt had a two-RBI base hit to left field for a 14-2 UD lead. Dayton tacked on four more runs in the fourth beginning with an RBI single down the right field line by Chandler. Rohren sent in the other three runs with his second home run of the season to right field, which put the Flyers on top 18-2. Rohren added another two RBI in the fifth inning on a double to the gap in left centerfield. DeLuca also drove in a pair of runs in the fifth as UD took a 22-2 lead. The Mastodons scored their second unearned run of the day in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 22-3 game, but the Flyers answered with an unearned run of their own in the top of the sixth to regain a 20-run advantage at 23-3. After IPFW put up another solo run in the sixth, Dayton came back with two more runs in the top of the seventh inning. A pair of Mastodon fielding errors began the frame and allowed Frank Tedesco to reach as a pinch hitter and score from second base. Roberto Ramos also lifted a sacrifice fly to left field which put Dayton ahead 25-4. The home team scored twice in the bottom of the seventh and once in the eighth to close out the Mastodon scoring on the day. Dayton capped the afternoon off with three runs in the ninth on RBI base hits by Swartzel, Haselhorst and Tedesco for a 28-7 Flyer victory. |
