DAYTON, Ohio - UD used a five-run eighth inning en route to a 9-4 win Monday over Rhode Island in the finale of its Atlantic 10 series.

The Flyers (17-9, 4-2 A-10) are now tied for second place in the Atlantic 10 West Division while the Rams (8-12, 4-2 A-10) fall into a tie for first in the A-10 East.

Senior Aaron Hepner led the Flyers with a 2-for-4 performance with a run scored and two-RBI including the game-winning hit in the bottom of the eighth.

Michael Massa finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI as UD out hit URI 12 to 8.

Craig Rohren added two hits in three at bats and scored twice for the Flyers.

Dayton played small ball to score its nine runs as only two of its 12 hits went for extra bases. A-10 Player of the Week Bobby Getty was 2-for-3 with a double and four RBI. Bryan Chandler also had a double as part of a 1-for-4 performance with a run scored.

Sophomore Kyle Lindsay earned the win in relief for the Flyers and improved to 2-1 on the year. He threw three shutout innings and surrendered just one hit while striking out three.

Lindsay came on for senior Kaleb Thompson who pitched the first six innings and allowed just two earned runs on seven hits while striking out three.

After the Rams took a 1-0 lead in the second, Dayton got on the board with a run of its own in the third. Massa reached on an infield single and then scored on a two-out single up the middle by Getty to knot the score at 1-all.

Rhody regained the lead in the fifth on an unearned run at 2-1, but UD countered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to take a one-run advantage. The Flyers loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a walk. Getty then drew his team-leading 15th walk of the season to send home Rohren. Brandon Godzik followed with his 23rd RBI of the season with a sacrifice fly to left field and put Dayton ahead 3-2.

The seesawed again as URI scored twice in the sixth to go ahead 4-3, but a two-out RBI single by Hepner sent Chandler home at tied the score at 4-all at end of the sixth inning.

UD then took the lead for good in the eighth with five runs on four hits. Hepner, Massa and Schumm each had one RBI in the rally which was capped by a two-out two-RBI double down the left field line by Getty to give Dayton a 9-4 victory.

The Flyers will begin a home-and-home series with Miami (Ohio) for their next two games. UD will travel to Oxford, Ohio for a 3 p.m. game Tuesday. Dayton will then host the RedHawks Wednesday in a 3 p.m. contest.
