DAYTON, Ohio - Twelve strikeouts by Flyer pitching was not enough as Dayton lost to visiting Cincinnati, 5-2 in non-conference action at Time Warner Cable Stadium on Tuesday. UD (10-16) is scheduled to resume its homestand on Wednesday against Indiana Southeast at 3 p.m. ET. Dayton scored twice in the bottom of the first inning and recorded double-digit strikeouts, but fell to 4-3 at home this season after being out hit by Cincinnati, 12-6. Flyer starter Sean Finn had his second straight solid start with eight strikeouts in 6.0 innings pitched. Senior Phil Ernst pitched a perfect seventh inning with two strikeouts before being replaced by Alex Dye who allowed two runs on five hits with a pair of strikeouts in 2.0 innings pitched. Offensively the Flyers were led by Scott Dunwoody who doubled, scored a run and drove in another as part of a 1-for-4 performance. Senior Michael Massa was hit by a pitch, stole a base and scored a run while sophomore Jeff Mercer had a sacrifice fly for Dayton which remained on school-record pace by being hit by pitch twice. UD has now been hit by pitch 51 times in 26 games (1.96 HBP per game). Bobby Getty finished 2-for-4 with a double while Myles Swartzel was 2-for-3 and was hit by a pitch for the Flyers. Dunwoody advanced to third on a groundout and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Jeff Mercer to put UD on top 2-1. UC evened the score with solo home run in the top of the third and then took the lead with leadoff blast in the fifth inning to go ahead 3-2.. The Bearcats padded their lead in the eighth on a two-out two-RBI double to right field to go ahead by three. Then UC reliever Jake Geglein retired the Flyers in order during the eighth and ninth innings to secure a 5-3 win for Cincinnati. |
