March 29, 2005
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Dayton lost a back-and-forth non-conference clash with IPFW, 11-10 Tuesday at Mastodons Field. The loss snapped a four-game Flyer (15-6) winning streak while the Mastodons improved to 10-6 on the year. In a game of offense, the two teams combined for 31 hits including 13 for extra bases. The Flyers finished with 12 as UD was led by a 3-for-5 day from Bobby Getty. Getty finished with a home run, two runs scored and an RBI in the contest. William Benoit and Craig Rohren each had two hits for Dayton. Benoit was 2-for-3 with a solo home run. Rohren was 2-for-5 adding a double and a run scored. Brandon Godzik was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a three-run home run on the day. He is now tied for the team lead with 22 RBI on the year. Bryan Chandler and Aaron Hepner also collected two RBI a piece in the contest. Senior Brooks Hazelbaker started on the mound for the Flyers for the second time this season. He allowed six earned runs on 11 hits over 5.2 innings pitched with two strikeouts. Phil Ernst and Kyle Lindsay combined to pitch the next 1.1 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits before giving way to Rohren. Rohren suffered his first loss of the season as he was credited with allowing one run on one hit while striking out two over 1.0 innings pitched. Dayton opened the scoring in second with a pair of solo home runs with one out. William Benoit smashed a ball over the left field wall for his fourth homer of the year. On the next at bat, Chandler followed with his third round tripper of the season as he lifted a ball above the right field wall. It marked the first time this season that UD went back-to-back and gave the Flyers a 2-0 lead midway through the second inning. Homestanding IPFW countered with a two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the frame to even the score at 2-all. The Mastodons then took their first lead of the game in the fourth with two runs on three hits. A pair of two-out RBI singles to left field put IPFW ahead 4-2 after the fourth inning. UD began its comeback in the fifth as Bobby Getty smashed a two-out home run to left centerfield. The sophomore's second homer of the season closed the Flyer deficit to 4-3. In the sixth, Dayton took a 6-4 lead with three unearned runs. McSoley led off with a single to short. Then after one out, Chandler laid down a bunt to the pitcher, but the fielder's throw was wide of first base and Chandler reached safely. Craig Rohren followed with a ground ball to short, but the Mastodons could not turn the double play and the inning continued. Hepner took advantage of the opportunity with a double to right center to drive in a pair of runs and give UD a 5-4 lead. Massa then hit another ground ball which made it through the legs of an IPFW infielder and allowed Hepner to score and put the Flyers ahead by two. The `Dons came back to even the score in the bottom of the sixth with another two-out rally. A triple followed by a pair of RBI singles tied the game at 6-6. Dayton regained the lead for the third time in the contest with a run in the top of the seventh. Getty opened with a single up the middle. Brandon Godzik was hit with the next pitch to give UD runners on first and second with no outs. McSoley laid down a bunt on the next at bat, but the Mastodons were able to retire the lead runner at third for the first out of the inning. Benoit followed with a walk to load the bases and a RBI groundout by Chandler plated Godzik and gave UD a 7-6 advantage. The Flyers put together a two-out rally to take a 10-6 lead in the eighth. After the first two batters were retired in order, Schumm hit a ground ball to second, but the ball was bobbled and the inning resumed. Getty followed with a single through the right side to give UD runners on first and second. Godzik took advantage with a three-run blast off the scoreboard in left centerfield as Dayton took a three-run lead. UD's lead would be short lived as IPFW scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to tied the score third time at 10-all. The `Dons plated their four runs on six hits before Rohren took over on the mound for the Flyers. The junior induced a ground ball which he fielded for the first out of the inning. He then intentionally walked the bases loaded before striking out the next two batters to end the threat with score tied at 10-10 at the end of eight innings. IPFW took control of its fate in the ninth as it led off with a double and a walk. After the runners advanced on a wild pitch, the next Mastodon batter was intentionally walked to load the bases. The `Dons then ended the game with a sacrifice fly to center which gave them an 11-10 victory. Dayton returns home to host Butler Wednesday at Time Warner Cable Stadium. The Flyers and Bulldogs are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. |
