FLYERS FALL IN FGCU CLASSIC OPENER TO NOTRE DAME, 11-4
March 14, 2007
FORT MEYERS, FL - Dayton fell behind early and could not recover in an 11-4 loss to Notre Dame at the FGCU Classic on Wednesday. The Flyers were held to just five hits while falling to 4-9 on the season. Two duo of senior Joe McSoley and freshman Cole Tyrell were the only UD player to reach base more than once. McSoley was 1-for-4 with a walk and a RBI while Tyrell finished 1-for-2 with a walk. Notre Dame jumped ahead 3-0 after the first inning and added three more runs in the top of the third before Dayton rallied with four runs on three walks and two hits in the bottom of the third. McSoley, Michael Massa and Jeff Mercer each drove in a run during the frame for the Flyers who pulled to within two at 6-4. However, Dayton would get no closer as the Irish regained control with another three runs in the fourth inning for a 9-4 advantage en route to an 11-4 loss for the Flyers. After UD allowed nine runs in the first four innings, a trio of Flyer relievers came out of the Flyer bullpen to slow down the Irish in the final five innings. Alex Dye struck out two batters while allowing just one run on two hits in 2.0 innings pitched. Sean Finn followed with another four strikeouts while allowing one run in the next 2.0 innings pitched. Chris Beesley closed out the day with scoreless ninth inning that included a strikeout. Notre Dame was led by Ross Brezovsky with a 3-for-5 day that included two doubles, two runs scored and three RBI. UD returns to action at the FGCU Classic against host Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. ET. |
