FLYERS FALL TO UNC ASHEVILLE, 4-3
March 6, 2005
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - Despite a stellar pitching performance by Luke Trubee, Dayton lost to UNC Asheville, 4-3 on Sunday in a non-conference game at Bush Stadium on the campus of Tennessee Tech University. Trubee (2-1) lost his first game of the season despite allowing just one earned run on a 10-strikeout complete game performance. It was his second 10-strikeout game of the season. UD (5-5) out hit UNCA (3-5) 9 to 3, but made four crucial errors in the sixth inning to let the game slip away. Michael DeLuca was 2-for-3 off the bench for the Flyers with a double and two runs scored. DeLuca entered in the bottom of the second inning for Michael Massa who had to leave the game due to injury. Preseason A-10 Player of the Year Brandon Godzik also had 2 hits for UD as part of a 2-for-4 day at the plate to extend his hitting streak to a team-best six games. Bobby Getty was the third of three Flyers with a pair of hits in the game. He was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Dayton's offense came out aggressively as it had seven base runners in the first two innings. In the second inning, Chandler reached on a UNCA throwing error. He moved to second on a single and a fielding error. The junior then scored on a errant pickoff attempt by the Bulldog catcher in which the throw went past the first baseman. The unearned run put Dayton ahead 1-0 midway through the second inning. The Flyers added another run in the fifth to take a 2-0 advantage. DeLuca led off with a double to right centerfield as his fly ball was lost in the sun by the UNCA outfielders. He moved to third on a ground out and tagged up on fly out to left field by Schumm. DeLuca then headed for home and as the throw came in he slid around the Asheville catcher for Dayton's second run of the day. UNCA took advantage of four Flyer fielding errors to score four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. A leadoff triple down the right field line broke up Trubee's perfect game and was the Bulldogs' first base runner in 16 at-bats. UD gave up just one earned run in the frame, but surrendered the lead to Asheville, 4-2. Dayton got one run back in the top of the seventh with a two-out rally. DeLuca singled through the left side and then scored from first on a double to the right centerfield gap by Getty. Getty's sixth RBI of the season pulled the Flyers within a run at 4-3. UD is scheduled to play its next five games at home beginning with a Tuesday contest against Miami (Ohio). The Flyers and the RedHawks are scheduled to open Time Warner Cable Stadium at 2 p.m. |
