Box Score

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Visiting Dayton could not overcome an early four-run deficit in a 5-3 loss to Appalachian State on Sunday at Ernie Shore Field.

Senior Bobby Getty led the Flyer offense with a 3-for-5 performance that included a double and RBI.

Overall, UD was out hit 11-8, despite a pair of 1-for-4 days with a run scored by Michael Massa and Max Navalinski.

Senior Joe McSoley and freshman Cole Tyrell each drove in a run for the Flyers who fell to 2-7 on the season.

Southpaw Cole Ort settled down to throw 6.2 effective innings for Dayton. Ort gave up five runs on 10 hits while striking out four batters.

Lucas Farden finished on the hill for the Flyers with 1.1 innings of shutout, one-hit relief work.

Homestanding ASU jumped on the board early with three runs in the first inning on a RBI single off the bat of David Rubenstein and an Issac Harrow two RBI double to take a 3-0 lead.

Dayton got one back in the top of the second after Max Navalinski started off the frame with a single to left center. Scott Dunwoody followed with a single to centerfield and the pair each stole a base to move to put runners on second and third with no outs. Joe McSoley then sent home Navalinski with a RBI groundout to make it a 3-1 deficit for Dayton.

The Mountaineers answered back with two more runs in the bottom of the second when David Rubenstein ripped a two-RBI double to right centerfield to put Appalchian State ahead 5-1 after two innings of play.

UD took advantage of an ASU fielding error to start a two-run rally in the fifth inning. The miscue allowed Frank Tedesco to reach base and he moved to second on single up the middle by Michael Massa. Bobby Getty sent home Tedesco with an RBI double to left centerfield. Michael Massa moved up to third on the play and would score on a RBI groundout by Cole Tyrell to pull the Flyers within two at 5-3.

Dayton would have just five base runners the rest of the way including three in the ninth inning, but could not knot up the score and were swept by Appalchian State on the weekend.
