BASEBALL EARNS COME-FROM-BEHIND WIN, BEATS #19/20 NOTRE DAME, 13-9
Feb. 26, 2005
Mesa, Ariz. - Dayton tallied a come-from-behind win over #19/20 Notre Dame by a count of 13-9 in 11 innings Saturday in the second game of a non-conference baseball doubleheader at HoHoKam Park. Dayton (4-3) and Notre Dame (4-2) will conclude the three-game series with another nine-inning game Sunday at Noon Eastern Time. The Flyers scored eight of their 13 runs from the ninth inning on and pounded out 17 hits in the contest as six Flyers had two hits a piece. Bobby Getty led the UD offense again as he went 2-for-3 with a double, three walks two runs scored and three RBI. Michael Massa, Galen Schumm, Joe McSoley, William Benoit and Roberto Ramos also had two hits each for Dayton. Junior Luke Trubee started on the mound and had a no-decision after surrendering five runs on 10 hits over 6.0 innings pitched. He struck out two while walking two and had one pickoff in the first inning. He was relieved by Drew Chesebro who allowed two runs over the next two innings before giving way to Kyle Lindsay. Lindsay earned the win after giving up just one run over 3.0 innings pitched while fanning four batters. Dayton opened the scoring with a run in the second inning as McSoley led off the frame with a single through the left side and came around to score on a two-out single by DeLuca. The redshirt freshman's RBI in his first start of the season gave UD a 1-0 lead. The Irish countered with three runs in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly and a pair of two out hits, a triple and a single, to build a 3-1 lead. UD came back with another run in the third to close the gap to 3-2 in favor of Notre Dame. Schumm reached on a single past the first baseman and went to second when Godzik was hit by a pitch in the following at bat. Schumm moved over to third on a fly out to center to give the Flyers runners on first and third with two outs. Benoit took advantage of the situation by poking a single to right field. The play extended his hitting streak to a team-best seven games and gave Benoit his fifth RBI of the year while Schumm scored his third run of the season. Notre Dame built a two-run advantage in the fifth after Brett Lilley ledoff with a double and scored on a RBI single to right center by Matt Edwards to put the Irish ahead 4-2. The comfort would be short lived for ND as Dayton put together a two-out rally in the sixth that resulted in three runs to take a 5-4 lead. Bryan Chandler ledoff with a single up the middle but was stuck at first as the next two Flyer batters struck out. Massa then singled off the glove of the first baseman and Chandler moved to third on the play. Getty then came through with a double to the right field wall to drive in Chandler and Massa to knot the score at 4-all. Getty scored on the next at bat on a single to center by Schumm as the Flyers took a 5-4 lead. ND would tie the score again at 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth when Cody Rizzo smashed a leadoff home run to left field. The next Irish batter would hit a triple to the right field corner and on the next play tagged at third on fly out to right. However, a strong throw by Godzik resulted in a double play and kept the score tied at 5-all through six innings. The Irish then took a two-run lead in the seventh with a two-out rally of their own. After the leadoff batter was hit by the first pitch of the game by Chesebro, the next two batters were retired on a pair of ground balls. Craig Cooper then hit a long fly ball, which carried over the head of the Flyer right fielder for an RBI double. Sean Gaston then followed with an RBI single to drive in Cooper and put Notre Dame ahead 7-5 after seven innings. Dayton would show its resiliency in the top of the ninth. Facing All-American closer Ryan Doherty, the first three Flyers to come to the plate reached base as McSoley and Benoit singled and Ramos was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Dayton appeared to tie the game at 7-7 when the next batter, DeLuca hit a high chopping ground ball down the left field line, but it was ruled foul and Doherty went on to record a strikeout. Craig Rohren came on to pinch hit and worked a 3-1 count before being hit by a pitch to send home the first run of the inning. Massa then fouled out just past the first base bag for the second out of the inning. Getty then came to the plate and was hit in the back to push the tying run across the plate and send the game into extra innings with the score 7-7. Dayton struck first in the 10th inning as Godzik drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by McSoley. Freshman Jeff Mercer then smacked a single through the right side to bring home Godzik and put the Flyers ahead 8-7. Notre Dame came back to extend the game to an 11th inning after Edwards poked a double to the left field corner to drive in Steve Andres from second to even the score at 8-8. The Flyers then exploded for five runs in the fifth to take a 13-8 advantage as Todd Presar and Ramos each had two RBI and McSoley added another. Although the Irish would plate one run in the bottom of the 11th, they could not tie the score as Dayton went on to win, 13-9. |
