DAYTON RALLIES PAST AUSTIN PEAY, 9-7
Feb. 25, 2006
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Dayton used an eight-run rally in the eighth inning to secure a 9-7 come from behind victory over host Austin Peay in non-conference baseball action on Saturday afternoon. The win was the second straight for the Flyers (2-2) who will play for the Championship of the APSU Invitational on Sunday against Iowa (2-0) at Noon ET. The game can be followed live with Gametracker on www.DaytonFlyers.com. A pair of Flyers had two hits a piece on the afternoon. Bobby Getty had a double, walk, run scored and an RBI as part of a 2-for-4 performance. Joe McSoley followed with a 2-for-5 day that also included a run scored and an RBI. Josh Burt and Bryan Chandler led the Flyers with two RBI a piece followed by one each from Galen Schumm, Craig Rohren and Max Navalinski. UD's nine runs came from nine different players with Michael Massa, Frank Tedesco, William Benoit and Cale Ort crossing the plate along with Getty, Chandler, McSoley, Rohren and Navalinski. After Flyer starter Chris Rubio allowed four earned runs on five hits over 4.0+ innings, the Dayton bullpen combined to shutdown the Governors over the final 5.0 innings behind the trio of Kyle Lindsay, Jordan Gaietto and Ort. Lindsay allowed just one hit while pitching the fifth inning before giving way to Gaietto who earned the win in his Flyer debut. The JC transfer threw 2.0 hitless innings of relief with a strikeout and two walks. Ort was credited with a save after throwing the final 2.0 innings with three strikeouts as he surrendered just one hit. Dayton got on the board first in the second after Burt laid down a sacrifice bunt to bring home Benoit, but Austin Peay scored three its part of the second and four more in the fifth for a 7-1 APSU advantage. The Flyers then used five hits, two walks and two Governor errors to score eight runs in the eighth inning. Massa singled through the hole on the left side of the infield to start things off followed by a walk of Getty. Then Massa moved to third on a wild pitch and scored when the APSU centerfield dropped what would have been a sacrifice fly to center. Getty advanced to third on the play and came home with a two-RBI single to left center by Chandler that also brought in Tedesco who entered as a pinch runner for Schumm. Ort then walked as a pinch hitter and moved up to second on a wild pitch behind Chandler who made his way to third. McSoley followed with an RBI through the right side to send in Chandler and Ort scored on an RBI groundout by Burt that knotted the score at 7-7. UD finished the comeback with an RBI double from Rohren, a single from Navalinski for his first collegiate RBI and another RBI from Getty to give Dayton a dramatic 9-7 victory. |
