JEFFERSON CITY, TN - Junior Luke Trubee recorded 10 strikeouts and Dayton scored six runs in the sixth inning to record an 8-5 win over Youngstown State in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader Saturday at the Southeastern Baseball Complex.

Dayton (3-2) will next face #22 Notre Dame in a three-game series next weekend in Mesa, AZ at HoHoKam Park, the Spring Training facility for the Chicago Cubs. With the loss, Youngstown State fell to 1-1 on the year.

Trubee, the current A-10 Pitcher of the Week, improved to 2-0 on the season after allowing just two earned runs over 6.1 innings pitched. The junior righthander had the Penguins off guard all game as seven of his 10 strikeouts were swinging.

Mark Eger threw the final 0.2 innings without allowing a hit to record his first career save.

UD had 11 hits overall as four Flyers had multiple-hit games. Joe McSoley was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. He also had his team leading third home run of the season and also leads Dayton with six runs scored and six RBI.

Three Flyers had two hits a piece including Michael Massa (2-for-3, 2B, HBP, SB, 2 R, RBI), Bobby Getty (2-for-4, SF, RBI) and William Benoit (2-for-2, 2B, HBP, R). Massa is tied with McSoley for the team lead in runs scored with six while Getty third on the team in batting overall with a .333 average. Benoit is the only Flyer to hit safely in all five games and leads the squad with a .538 average and a 1.077 slugging percentage.

After Dayton took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI groundout by Brandon Godzik which drove in Massa; YSU came back with two runs of their own in the second. A leadoff homer by Jim Phillips and a Erich Diedrach sacrifice fly gave the Penguins a 2-1 lead through 1 1/2 innings.

After three strong innings of work, Youngstown State starter Kevin Libeg gave way to Eric Shaffer to begin the fourth inning. McSoley promptly greeted the freshman Shaffer as he sent his first collegiate pitch over the left field wall for a home run to tie the score at 2-all.

Dayton would take over the game with a six-run sixth inning in which all six run were driven in by a different Flyer and UD sent 12 batters to the plate. After five singles, three walks, a sacrifice fly, stolen base and hit by pitch, Dayton went ahead for good 8-2.

A late rally would prove to not be enough for YSU as they would score three unearned runs in the top of the seventh to complete the scoring at 8-5.

The game which was originally scheduled for nine-innings was called ater 7 1/2 innings of play due to darkness.
