LONG BALL PROPELS DAYTON TO 5-2 WIN AT WOFFORD
Feb. 12, 2005 SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Visiting Dayton completed a doubleheader sweep of Wofford with a 5-2 victory Saturday in non-conference baseball action at Russell C. King Field. Redshirt sophomore Joe McSoley led the Flyers at the plate with a pair of two-run home runs as part of a 2-for-4 performance. McSoley as one of three Flyers to record at two base hits as Brandon Godzik was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Galen Schumm finished 2-for-4. Luke Trubee earned a win in his first start of the season after allowing just two runs on seven hits while fanning three and walking none over 7.0 innings pitched. The Flyers got on the board first in the second as Godzik ledoff the inning with a walk followed by a home run to left center by McSoley to give UD a 2-0 advantage. Wofford countered with a leadoff, solo homer to left field by David Long to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Flyers. The Terriers then tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth when with one out single to center by Zach Pittman and then scored on a Scott Holloway double to the right centerfield wall. Trubee held off the charge from Wofford as he struck out Eric Sturkie and retired the side on a fielder's choice off the bat of David Long. Dayton responded in the top of the sixth with a solo homer to left center by Benoit to leadoff the inning and regain the lead at 3-2. UD added two more runs in the seventh as McSoley had his second round tripper of the game down the left field line to put the Flyers ahead 5-2. Dayton and Wofford will conclude a three-game series Sunday with a single-game at 1 p.m. |
