FLYER BASEBALL WINS SEASON OPENER AT WOFFORD, 13-8
Feb. 12, 2005
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Dayton Flyer baseball team opened its 2005 season with a 13-8 win over Wofford in the first game of a doubleheader at Russell C. King Field on Saturday. UD pounded out 11 hits on the day as four Flyers had multiple base hits. Sophomore Michael Massa led the way with a 3-for-5 performance with two RBI and three runs scored. Three other Dayton players had two hits a piece. Junior William Benoit was 2-for3 with a run scored and a pair of RBI. Classmates Galen Schumm went (2-for-4, run scored) and Bobby Getty (2-for-5, run, RBI) also had two hits each in their Flyer debuts. Preseason A-10 Player of Year Brandon Godzik was held without a hit in the opener, but was productive in his plate appearances with three RBI and a run scored. Junior Craig Stammen earned his first win of the season after allowing just two runs on five hits while striking out three over 6.0 innings pitched. Dayton jumped out of the gate with four runs in the first and two more in the second. After Massa opened the season for Flyers with a single up the middle on the first pitch he saw, Wofford recorded one out before Schumm doubled to right field to give UD runners at second and third. Godzik hit a sharp ground ball to third and the Terrier first baseman could not hold on to the throw, which allowed Massa to score from third. The Flyers added three more runs in the first on a wild pitch and a two-RBI single by Benoit before scoring a pair in the second on Bobby Getty RBI single through the left side and a sacrifice fly by Godzik to take a 6-0 lead. Homestanding Wofford came back to score a pair of runs in the third, but Dayton responded with a five-run fifth and a two-run sixth to put the game out of reach for the Terriers. Junior Bryan Chandler had a grand slam in the fifth for his first hit as a Flyer since transferring from Sinclair Community College. |
