FLYERS ROUTE WRIGHT STATE IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE

DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton women's tennis team capped off its regular season with a convincing 6-1 win over local rival Wright State on Thursday evening at Dayton Center Courts. With the victory, Dayton shook off two consecutive losses to end the dual match season with an 8-9 record. The eight wins are the most in a season since the 2005 squad posted a 12-6 record. The Flyers won four singles matches, all in straight sets. Freshman Sara Smith saw her first action this spring, but played like a veteran en route to an easy 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6. Other singles winners for UD were freshman Loni Dickerhoof at No. 1, sophomore Laina Grote at No. 2, and senior Nikki Dzubay at No. 4. Dayton also took two of three doubles courts, led by an 8-6 win from Dzubay and sophomore Kelly O'Connell at No. 1. At No. 3 doubles, Grote and junior Molly Mathews won by default after leading the match 6-3. UD will end the season at the Atlantic 10 Championships in Monroeville, PA. The three-day tournament begins on Friday, April 17. Seeding and draws will be released at a later date and posted on DaytonFlyers.com when available. |
