CROSS COUNTRY OPENS SEASON WITH STANDOUT EFFORTS

DAYTON, Ohio - It was an unprecedented day for both University of Dayton cross country programs as Chris Lemon and Maureen Bulgrin finished first overall for the men's and women's squad's, both breaking meet records at the 11th annual Meijer Flyer 5k Saturday afternoon at Indian Riffle Park in Kettering, Ohio. The Dayton men finished first overall with 23 points, while the women's team placed second with 32. The UD men swept the first three overall positions with sophomore Chris Lemon winning the race finishing in a new meet record time of 14:56. It was the first time a Flyer has ever run under 15 minutes. Redshirt senior Mike Andersen finished runner-up clocking in at 15:04, followed by Matt Lemon who placed third in 15:17. Greg Roeth was fifth overall and fourth for UD with a time of 15:17. Jeremy Schiele finished 12th overall (15:30) to round out the top 5 runners for UD. Ryan Shirley (15:57) and Kyle Lowry (16:00) finished as UD's sixth and seventh runners, respectively. Miami followed Dayton with 34 points and IUPUI was third with 75. Morehead State came in fourth (123 points), while the local Wright State Raiders rounded out the scoring with 139 points. In the men's college division Wayne State won the meet with 40 points, Findlay was second (41 points), followed by Northern Kentucky University (3rd, 52 points), Wittenberg (4th, 91 points), and Urbana (5th, 150 points). In the women's race, it was the first time since the 2002 season a Dayton Flyer won the meet. Maureen Bulgrin took the top spot in 18:03, which was a meet record by seven seconds. Liz Coorey finished second overall at 18:09. Elissa Mason also finished in the top 10 running 18:28 to score third for UD. Miami's women's team won the meet with 29 points, while Dayton finished just behind with 32 points, good for second place. Ohio State was third (76 points), IUPUI was fourth (108 points), Wright State finished fifth (148 points) and Morehead State was sixth (173 points). The Northern Kentucky Norse won the college division (41 points). Wittenberg placed second (58 points); followed by Findlay (60 points) and Wayne State (65 points). The Flyers return to action next weekend at the Mel Brodt Invitational. Dayton will travel to Bowling Green, OH on Saturday, Sept. 12.
