FLYERS WELL REPRESENTED ON A-10 BASEBALL ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMS
May 24, 2005 DAYTON - Four Flyers won a total of five awards at the Atlantic 10 Baseball Awards Dinner Tuesday night at the Dayton Marriott. Galen Schumm was named First Team All-Conference while Michael Massa and Luke Trubee were named to the Second Team. Trubee also joined Craig Stammen on the All-Academic Team. Schumm, UD's second baseman for 54 of 55 games this year, enters the A-10 Championships Wednesday at Fifth Third Field with a .354 batting average, .516 slugging percentage and a .437 on base percentage. He has 16 extra base hits to his credit while also recording 18 multi-hit games and seven multi-RBI performances while also tallying a 14-game hitting streak at one point. Schumm has hit three home runs in his last seven games and has scored 41 runs overall this season while collecting 39 RBI. Massa, the team's leadoff batter and shortstop for all 55 games this season, is second in the A-10 with 72 hits this season which included a 14-game hitting streak of his own and holds a .336 batting average and a .413 on base percentage. He is also second in the conference in stolen bases and runs scored. Massa has reached base 45 percent of the time he has come to the plate as a leadoff hitter in an inning and has helped on the defensive side as well, turning 37 double plays this season. Trubee, ranks second in the nation and leads the A-10 with a school record 12 wins this season. He also boasts a 2.51 ERA with 80 strikeouts and just 14 walks in 100.1 innings pitched. Trubee also leads the conference with three complete game shutouts and another combined shutout. The righthander was named A-10 Pitcher of the Week three times and was honored on the National College Baseball Foundation's National Honor Roll twice, including this week. Trubee holds a 3.141 GPA as a mechanical engineering major. Stammen, has an 8-6 record this season with a 2.60 ERA and has won seven of his last 10 starts. The junior righty has fanned 70 batters to pull within six strikeouts of the career record at Dayton in just three seasons of work. Stammen has pitched 97.0 innings this season while making 14 starts and has held his opponents to a .250 batting average against him. He holds a 3.481 GPA with a major in business management. Stammen will toe the mound as the starting pitcher for fourth-seeded Dayton in the opening game of the 2005 Atlantic 10 Baseball Championships Wednesday at noon against Duquesne. The day will begin with a ceremonial first-pitch by UD Head Men's Basketball Coach Brian Gregory followed by games at Noon, 3:30 pm and 7:00 pm at Fifth Third Field in Downtown Dayton. |
