SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH GEORGE WASHINGTON

Game One Box | Game Two Box

WASHINGTON
– The University of Dayton softball team (19-24, 6-7 A-1) split with the George Washington Colonials (18-27, 8-8 A-10) on Saturday at GW Softball Field. Dayton won the first game 6-5 after senior Brandy Brown had a three-run double in the seventh inning. The Flyers fell 4-0 in game two.

“We were pleased with how we came back and kept fighting in game one,” Dayton head coach Cara LaPlaca said. “Unfortunately, we weren’t able to generate enough offense to take the second game.”

In addition to her three RBI, Brown was 3-for-7 on the day. Senior Lauren Nacke was 2-for-5 with a double. Freshman Tiffany Ricks had a pinch-hit double and senior Megan Barrett also doubled.

Freshman Kayla English (9-7) earned the win in game one. English had six strikeouts and two walks  while pitching a complete game for UD. Sarah Wedel started game two, Wedel (5-4) threw four innings and had three strikeouts. Sophomore Alysha Isaacson pitched two innings of relief.

Dayton opened the scoring in game one on Ricks’ two-run double to right center field in the fourth inning.

George Washington knotted the game in the bottom half of the fourth with a two-run home run by Tara Fogarty.

Fogarty struck again in the bottom of the sixth inning with a three-run home run to take a 5-2 lead.

The Flyers fought back furiously in the top of the seventh inning. Megan Barrett doubled to lead off the seventh inning. An error by GW’s second baseman allowed Barrett to cross the plate and pull within two of the Colonials.

With one out and two runners on  base, Maloof singled through the middle on a line drive that injured starter Kara Clauss to load the bases.

GW pitcher Heidi Penna came in to relieve Clauss and struck out Jennings making it a two-out game. In the next at-bat, Brown unleashed a three-run double to put Dayton over the Colonials 6-5 in game one.

Dayton committed four errors in game two as the Colonials scored four unanswered runs to blank UD 4-0 and split the series.

The Flyers return to action on Tuesday against the Ohio Bobcats in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 24th beginning at 2 p.m. ET.
