Box Score

SAN MARCOS, Texas
– The University of Dayton softball team lost 5-2 to the UT Arlington Mavericks in a rainy season opener for the Flyers on Friday.

Game time stretched to just over four hours after rains soaked the softball complex at Texas State.

Senior Megan Barrett was 2-for-2 with a stolen base for the Flyers. Junior Carlyn Harlow was 1-for-3 with a run scored and sophomore Rachel Archer was 1-for-4 also scoring a run for UD. Archer also had a stolen base. Junior Kathleen Maloof had her first double of the season.

Senior Sarah Wedel pitched 2.1 innings for Dayton. Wedel had one strikeout and two walks, while allowing two Maverick runs. Sophomore Alysha Isaacson stepped in to relieve pitching 2.2 innings, allowing one earned run while striking out two. Freshman Kayla English also saw action, throwing 1.1 innings with one strikeout.

Archer scored the opening run of the game in the top of the first inning. After stealing third, she was brought home by an illegal pitch by UT Arlington.

An illegal pitch allowed the Flyers to score again, this time in the second inning. With runners on second and third, the illegal pitch allowed Harlow to cross the plate giving UD a 2-0 lead.

UT Arlington’s Erica LeFlore ripped a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning to knot the game at two apiece.

An illegal pitch by Dayton allowed the Mavericks to pull ahead 3-2. The Mavericks added two additional runs after an error with the bases loaded.

With Friday’s loss, Dayton is 0-1 on the season while UT Arlington improves to 5-2. UD was originally scheduled to play a second game on Friday against Rutgers, however, that game has been postponed due to field conditions from the rain. A time for the game will not be set until later in the tournament, and may become officially cancelled due to field conditions. The Flyers return to action on Saturday against Texas State at 1:30 p.m. ET.
