The University of Dayton football teamscored three touchdowns in just over a minute on the game clock to cruise to a 49-10 at Valparaiso on Saturday. Seven different Flyers scored touchdowns for UD in the 1,000th game in school history.
Dayton got 21 points wrapped around halftime to blow the game wide open. Quarterback Will Bardo ran it in from five yards out with 54 seconds left in the first half, linebacker Collin Monnier intercepted a pass at the UD 46 and then Bardo needed just two plays to go 54 yards, hitting Branden Johnson for a 44-yard TD with 19 seconds before the half. Valparaiso kicked off to the Flyers to start the second half, and Gary Hunter brought it back 88 yards to put Dayton up 35-3 twelve seconds into the second half.
Bardo was 15 of 21 for 200 yards passing, and also carried the ball eight times for 58 yards. Taylor Harris had 15 carries for 77 yards and Dan Jacob added six for 66 yards. Brian Mack was the fourth Flyer to gain 50 yards with exactly 50 on 14 attempts. All four scored touchdowns.
Bardo’s 15 passes were spread among six receivers. Tyler Hujik led with four for 28 yards. Branden Johnson had three for 73 (including a 44-yard TD) and Jordan Boykin had three for 65 (including a 55-yard TD). Luke Bellman had two for 13 and Hunter added two for seven. Alex Johnston caught one pass for 18 yards.
Monnier led the Dayton defense with seven hits, the interception and a sack. Fellow linebacker Bryan Bailin had six tackles. Backup defensive tackle Kevin Bell had five solo hits and a sack. Kevin Kern forced a fumble, Matt Pfleger recovered it and Joe Janasek added his first career interception.
Every available player on the trip played in the game (57). Backups played the entire fourth quarter, and UD played three quarterbacks for the first time all season. Dayton’s last pass came on its last play of the third quarter.
The game was the 1,000th in Dayton history. The Flyers are the 34th FCS team to play 1,000 games. UD has an all-time record of 628-345-27, the 10th-most wins in FCS football history.
Dayton improved to 6-3 on the season, clinching its 34th winning season in the last 35 years. UD is also 4-2 in the Pioneer Football League. The Flyers are home next Saturday to host San Diego on Senior Day. Game time at Welcome Stadium is 1 p.m. ET.
