CONCORD, N.C. - University of Dayton redshirt junior Greg Roeth earned All-Atlantic 10 honors for the third consecutive year after taking third place at the 34th Annual Men's Cross Country Championship at Frank Liske Park. The Flyers took fourth place as a team.
Roeth was 10 seconds from winning the individual title, running the 8K race in a time of 24:28.7, which is a personal best time, one second off his previous best. La Salle’s Alfredo Santana, also a junior, won the race in 24:18.0. Senior Kevin McDonnell, of Saint Joseph’s, was runner-up in 24:23.6.
Roeth was the Rookie of the Year as a freshman and last year, finished in eighth place – all seven runners in front of him were seniors.
As a team, Dayton, ranked No. 15 in the Great Lakes Region rankings, was fourth with 119 points. La Salle won the team championship with 39 points, followed by Duquesne with 72 points and Saint Joseph’s in third with 74 points.
Junior Kyle Lowry was UD’s No. 2 finisher, taking 21st place in 25:15.2.
Freshman Michael Russell stepped up for the Flyers as their third man. He was 26th overall in a time of 25:24.2, taking 50 seconds off his previous personal best. He posted the third-best time of all freshmen in the A-10. Junior Jeremy Schiele was not too far behind, crossing the line in 25:27.5 for 28th place. Junior Nate Addessi was UD’s fifth man, taking 44th in 25:50.7.
Dayton’s other finishers were: sophomores Eric Gruenbacher (52nd in 26:00.8) and Doug Norris (69th in 26:26.0), junior Stephen Mackell (78th in 26:37.7), sophomore Tyler Roeth (97th in 27:13.6), junior Derek Bornhorst (98th in 27:18.2).
Last year the Flyers also placed fourth, with 116 points.
“We scored 119 points and we had 116 last year. Last year we thought it was a little disappointing but this year fourth place is more favorable for us,” said UD Head Coach Rich Davis. “We’re maintaining a position of third and fourth for last couple of years in the A-10. We want the top spot and we have high hopes to get there next year. We have everyone back and we showed today we are gelling as a team.
“We’re becoming a deeper team and more evenly balanced,” he added. “Our top three got 14 points last year and this year the top three was 50. We are no stronger than our fifth man. Our fourth and fifth men are getting stronger and it shows a good future for us.”
Dayton will next compete in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional in Toledo, Ohio Saturday, Nov. 12 at noon.
