DAYTON WOMEN FINISH 1ST; MEN 2ND AT FLYER 5K

DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton women’s cross country team claimed the 2011 meijer Flyer 5K Challenge title after three Flyer runners took the top three individual spots.  The UD men were runners-up and had two finishers in the Top 10.

The highlight of the meet was the 1-2-3 finish by UD senior Elissa Mason (18:15), sophomore Lizzie Gleason (18:35) and senior Emily Zimmerman (18:40). Freshman Katie Ollier (8th in 19:08) and junior Taylor Beyerle (9th 19:12) also placed in the Top 10. Dayton claimed the title with 19 points, breaking Miami’s four-year streak of winning the Flyer 5K. The RedHawks came in second with 46 points. Ashland won the women’s Intercollegiate Divison.

The men kicked off the meet with the 5,000-meter race. For the second consecutive season Miami won the NCAA D-I portion with 29 points. Dayton followed closely behind with 40 points. Shawnee State won the Intercollegiate Division with 28 points.

UD redshirt junior Greg Roeth took second place in 15:23, just three seconds off the winner Jarrod Eick of Miami. Junior Stephen Mackell took ninth place for the Flyers with a time of 15:48. Also for Dayton, junior Kyle Lowry finished two seconds outside the Top 10, taking 11th place in 15:55. Junior Jeremy Schiele finished 16th in 16:02; and sophomore Eric Gruenbacher was Dayton’s fifth best runner, finishing 18th in 16:04.

Both the Flyer men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete at the National Catholic Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame on Friday, Sept. 16 at 5 p.m.
