FLYERS WIN COUNTRY INN & SUITES TOURNAMENT TITLE

19th-ranked Dayton won the 2011 Green Bay/Country Inn & Suites Tournament on Saturday.

GREEN BAY, Wis. – University of Dayton volleyball captured the 2011 Green Bay/Country Inn & Suites Tournament title after a four-set win over Green Bay on Saturday evening (25-19, 15-25, 25-19, 25-23).

Sophomore Megan Campbell took home Most Valuable Player honors for the tournament after registering a combined 33 kills in two matches on Saturday. Senior Yvonne Marten and junior Rachel Krabacher earned all-tournament honors. Krabacher had a match-high 18 kills and 11 digs for her third double-double of the tournament. Marten had a double-double of her own with 10 kills and 12 digs on Saturday evening.

Junior Paige Vargas renewed her career-high in digs with 35 against Green Bay. Her previous career-high was 31 against Saint Louis on Nov. 22, 2009.

Down 17-22 in the fourth and final set, the Flyers stormed back to end the match on an 8-1 run without lone senior and team captain Marten. Despite losing Marten’s production and leadership due to an apparent injury midway through the fourth set, the Flyers stepped up to take the match and the tournament title.

Krabacher had three kills during Dayton’s match-ending run and freshman Brigid Campbell notched her first two kills of her collegiate career in Marten’s stead. Tournament MVP (Megan) Campbell served the last points of the match for Dayton, inheriting a 21-23 score and closing the match for the win.

The Flyers held the Phoenix to hitting percentages of .050 in the first and third sets, but Green Bay finished with a slightly advantageous hitting percentage at the end of the night – out-hitting UD .194-to-.184.

Dayton improves to 3-0, while the Horizon’s League’s Green Bay squad falls to 1-2 on the season. The Phoenix were led by Abbey Gitter, who recorded 13 kills on a .462 hitting percentage.

The 19th-ranked Flyers return to action next weekend at the State Farm Illini Classic, where two top 25 teams await UD – No. 8 Illinois and T-No. 24 Tennessee and Houston.
