EMILY ZIMMERMAN TABBED STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Maura Bulgrin, Ashley Cattran and Courtney Siebenaller joined Emily Zimmerman on the Academic All-Conference Team
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – University of Dayton junior track and field standout Emily Zimmerman has been selected as the Atlantic 10’s Student-Athlete of the Year in women’s outdoor track and field. Additionally, seniors Maura Bulgrin and senior Ashley Cattran and junior Courtney Siebenaller join Zimmerman on the A-10’s Academic All-Conference Team.

Zimmerman earned A-10 Second Team All-Conference accolades at the 2011 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championship after finishing second in the 10,000-meter run and eighth in the 5,000-meter run. She also set a school record in the 5K with a time of 16:42.10 at the All-Ohio Outdoor Championships. The Dayton, Ohio native earned the Flyers’ Most Improved Runner Award. She is majoring in adolescence to young adult education and foreign language education while maintaining a 4.0 grade point average.

All four Flyers honored by the A-10 were Indoor Academic All-Conference selections this year.  Bulgrin has a 3.719 GPA and set a program record in the 10K with a time of 35:17.18 at the All-Ohio Outdoor Championships.

Cattran finished in the Top 10 in every event this outdoor season except for one. She was also the A-10’s Indoor Student-Athlete Of The Year and carries a 3.989 GPA.

Siebenaller was the A-10’s champion in the pole vault with an A-10 Outdoor Championship record-height of 12-07.50. In addition, she also broke the school’s pole vault record with a height of 13-01.50 at the Ashland Alumni Open. Siebenaller has a 3.399 GPA.

Dayton’s four selections to the academic all-conference team are the most in the A-10. Charlotte had two selected to the team and Duquesne, Fordham, Rhode Island, Richmond, Saint Louis and Xavier each had one. This is the third time that Dayton has placed four on the academic all-conference team. The Flyers also achieved this accomplishment after both the 2010 and 2011 indoor seasons.

Additionally, this is the third consecutive time a Dayton track and field student-athlete has been named the A-10’s Student-Athlete of the Year. Senior Ashley Cattran was the 2010 Outdoor Track and Field Student-Athlete of the Year and the 2011 Indoor Student-Athlete of the Year.

The Flyers placed second at the 2011 A-10 Outdoor Championships.  The list of qualifiers for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Preliminary Round is expected to be released this afternoon at 1 p.m. ET.
