DAYTON, Ohio – University of Dayton Head Coach Cara LaPlaca has announced the addition of junior college ace pitcher Sydney Cicchetti to the 2011-12 recruiting class.
“We are excited to announce Sydney's commitment to our softball program. She will fit very well with our current team and help solidify our pitching staff. Her recent accomplishments and strong work ethic are impressive. We expect her to have an immediate impact,” LaPlaca said. “Sydney is a person of high character and academic success as well. We are thrilled to welcome her to the Dayton Flyer family.”
Cicchetti is a highly touted transfer from Seward County Community College in Liberal, Kan. On April 13 of this season, Cicchetti was named the NJCAA National Pitcher of the Week. She earned the accolade after posting a 0.81 ERA over a four-game span while striking out 20.
A sophomore for the Saints, Cicchetti has built on an impressive freshman campaign in 2010. This season she has a 23-3 record with a 1.33 ERA and 197 strikeouts in 169.0 innings pitched. She entered the year in the Top 10 in nearly every pitching category in Saints program history including wins, strikeouts and ERA.
Cicchetti has been named the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Pitcher of the Week nine times this season. Her current winning percentage (.824) is a school record at Seward. She’s second in school history in career strikeouts (305) and career ERA (1.48) and third in career wins (42) and single-season strikeouts (197).
The Trail, B.C. native was an NJCAA All-Region VI Honorable Mention as a freshman, and was also an honorable mention on the Jayhawk West All-Conference team. In 2010, she tossed seven shutouts and had a 1.66 ERA, while going 19-6.
The Saints hope to advance to the NJCAA National Tournament for the third consecutive season when they compete in the Region VI Tournament on Saturday in Wichita, Kan.
Prior to joining Seward County, Cicchetti attended J. Lloyd Crowe Secondary School in Trail. Cicchetti was a three-sport athlete for the Hawks.
The Flyers are 21-24 this season and recently clinched their first Atlantic 10 Tournament berth since 2000, when they beat the Charlotte 49ers 5-4 on April 30. The tournament is scheduled to begin on May 11 in Charlotte, N.C.
