HIGH POINT,  N.C. – University of Dayton baseball lost two games of a doubleheader against High Point on Saturday afternoon at Willard Stadium to fall to 4-6 on the season. The Panthers (7-6) swept the three-game season series for their seventh consecutive victory.

“Offensively, we played terrible today,” Head Coach Tony Vittorio said. “We had great pitching and great defense today, but team offense wasn’t there at all. When we score six runs the whole weekend – I don’t know how you win a game that way.”

Game 1 – High Point 3, Dayton 1
Junior Mike Hasuchild (2-1) started the first game on the mound and ended with his second complete-game of the season. Hauschild threw five scoreless innings with no walks and three strikeouts.

All of High Point's runs were scored by batters who reached base as a result of being hit by a pitch.

The Flyers out-hit the Panthers at the plate, 8-7, but left eight runners on base. Junior Zach Stewart went 3-for-4 at the plate and senior Jonathan Castine finished 2-for-4 with one run scored.

High Point scored two runs in the eighth to take the go-ahead lead. The Panthers’ starting pitcher Jared Avidon (1-0) threw seven innings with seven strikeouts, allowing one run, to earn the win.

Game 2 – High Point 3, Dayton 2
Dayton’s bats were once again held at bay for most of the second game as High Point starter Mike Caldwell (2-1) threw six scoreless innings of his 7 2/3-inning outing with one earned run.

High Point scored first in all three games this weekend after putting up two runs in the third inning – a hit batter led off the third for the Panthers and back-to-back two-out RBI hits drove the first runs of the day. Murray White IV drove in the first run on a single up the middle and finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored.

Junior Tim Bury (0-1) went 4 1/3 innings in his third start of the season, tossing two strikeouts with three earned runs. Dayton relief pitching took over with one out in the fifth inning and retired 11 of the remaining 12 High Point batters in the game – only allowing one hit in 3 2/3 innings.

Dayton made a pair of two-out rallies in the seventh and eighth innings to make it a one-run game. Junior Zach Stewart kept the Flyers’ hopes alive in the seventh with a base hit and taking advantage of two Panther errors – a misplayed ball in the outfield and a wild pitch – to advance to third base. Junior Mike Caughlin drove Stewart in with a single up the middle for Dayton’s first run of the game.

A pair of two-out doubles from junior Bobby Glover and junior C.J. Gillman in the eighth inning would make it a one-run game, 3-2. Gillman finished with two hits and an RBI in game two.

In the ninth inning, the Flyers nearly took the lead after a High Point defensive melt down which loaded the bases with no hits. HPU committed two errors in the inning, but left the bases loaded in the ninth to win its seventh consecutive game. Ryan Retz, who started the game in centerfield for HPU, pitched the last 2/3 inning with two strikeouts for his first save of the season.

Dayton opens the 2011 home season on Tuesday at Time Warner Cable Stadium, hosting Shawnee State at 3 p.m. ET.
