DAYTON, Ohio – Needing a sweep to keep their chase for a berth in the Atlantic 10 Championship alive, the University of Dayton Flyers did just that on Sunday in a 5-1 win over Saint Joseph’s at Time Warner Cable Stadium.
Dayton (23-29, 12-12 A-10) had outstanding pitching and clutch hitting to complete the sweep.
Cole Tyrell had three RBI in the game. He drove one home on a ground out to the second baseman and also hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning. Aaron Dunsmore had two RBI on a double and a fielder’s choice. Brian Blasik was 3-for-4 with one double.
Mike Hauschild had a stellar outing for the Flyers. He pitched the first three innings of the game without allowing a hit, and finished the day with eight strikeouts. He threw 7.1 innings and allowed one earned run for his second win of the weekend. Hauschild’s win improves him to 4-6.
Trent Haughn pitched 1.2 innings of relief, earning his third save of the season. Haughn had two strikeouts, including the final out of the game that gave UD the win.
Dunsmore drove home Joe Gayda on a fielder’s choice, after David Valesente was unable to complete a double play. Blasik scored on Tyrell’s grounded out to Valesente.
Dunsmore struck again in the bottom of the third inning, driving a two-out double into the gap to score Blasik for a second time. Tyrell crushed a two-run home run over the left field wall to give UD a 5-0 lead through three innings.
Saint Joseph’s got on the board after a base hit by Quinn Renner to left field, scoring Drew Smith. Gayda threw Joe Cook out at home as he tried to score SJU’s second run on the hit.
