DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team was unable to complete the sweep over the Canisius Griffins at Time Warner Cable on Sunday, falling 9-8.

UD’s three-game win streak comes to an end as they drop to 8-10 on the year. Canisius improves to 11-7 this season.

Aaron Dunsmore was 2-for-5 with a two-run home run and two runs scored. Brian Blasik had a two-run double, while Cole Tyrell was 1-for-4 with one RBI.

Trent Haughn was saddled with his first loss of the season. The rookie from Ottawa, Ohio pitched two innings against the Griffins.  Haughn had four strikeouts, one walk and one earned run against. Cameron Hobson made the start and allowed three earned runs, while striking out two.

The Griffins opened up the game with five runs through the first three and a half innings. Dayton got on the board in the bottom half of the fourth after Joe Gayda crossed the plate on a fielding error by the Canisius shortstop. An error by the Griffins second baseman allowed Jimmy Roesinger to cut the deficit to three, 4-2

Zach Jacob scored on an error by the second baseman. Blasik ripped a two-run double past the shortstop in the bottom of the sixth inning to knot the game at five apiece.

An attempt to get a favorable pitching matchup against Aaron Dunsmore backfired in the seventh inning as Dunsmore hammered a fastball over the right center field wall scoring Gayda and himself.

Canisius scored three runs, two of which were unearned to pull back ahead of the Flyers in the top of the eighth inning.

A sacrifice fly from Tyrell scored Zach Blanchette in the ninth inning to pull within one run. However, Dayton was unable to drive in the tying run on third base.

The Flyers return to action on Tuesday against the Toledo Rockets at Time Warner Cable Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Admission is free to all UD games. Mike Ivcic will call this week’s games on 1660 Information Radio.
