PITTSBURGH – he University of Dayton men’s soccer team (8-4-1, 2-2-1 A-10) held off a late charge by the Duquesne Dukes (5-9-1, 2-2-1 A-10)  to win 2-1 at Rooney Field on Sunday.

“I thought that we had a much higher work rate today,” Head Coach Dennis Currier said. “It’s always tough going against a team as physical as Duquesne, but I thought we were able to grind it out.”

Senior Daniel Berko scored the game-winning goal for the Flyers in the first half.  Graduate student Eddie Jones had the game’s first goal just minutes into the match.

Freshman goalkeeper Chris Froschauer made seven saves in the match. Duquesne held a 22-16 advantage in total shots, while the Flyers held a slight margin in shots on goal, 10-8.

“Maik and [Ryan] Peterson had strong games,” Currier said. “On top of that, our back four was solid for us.”

Jones opened the scoring in the ninth minute after Abe Keller’s corner kick. Jones finished a loose ball in the goal mouth to take a 1-0 lead against the Dukes.

Berko extended the lead late in the first half. Berko used his speed to get past the Duquesne defense for a breakaway goal in the 39th minute. Freshman Maik Schoonderwoerd had an assist on the goal.

Duquesne’s Adam Clement cut the Flyer lead to 2-1 in the 84th minute. Clement headed in a cross from Nathan McCann for the goal.

Dayton will close out its road slate next weekend when they play Richmond and receiving votes VCU on Friday and Sunday.
