STEPHEN MACKELL NAMED FIRST TEAM ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT

University of Dayton men’s cross country junior Stephen Mackell was selected as a 2012 Capital One / CoSIDA Academic All-District® V First Team selection.

With his first team selection, Mackell, a native of Findlay, Ohio, is eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. This is his first Academic All-District honor.

Mackell, who carries a 3.99 GPA as a double major in economics and philosophy, finished second in the 10K at the 2012 All-Ohio Track Championships in 31:16.43. He took third in the 5K at Don Kleinow Invite this spring. He was awarded Dayton’s High Flyer award for academic achievement, team leadership and service.

During the cross country season, he was the second man at the Flyer 5K with a time of 15:48 and third at the NCAA Pre-Nationals in 26:10. He was fourth on the team at the National Catholic Championships and NCAA Great Lakes Regional 10K. Mackell holds one of the Top 25 All-Time 10K performances at UD and the 10th best Personal Best 8K time.

Capital One / CoSIDA Academic All-Americans® for Cross Country and Track Field will be announced on June 21. Only members of the Academic All-America Committee and the CoSIDA Board of Directors vote at the national level to determine the Academic All-America teams.
