DAYTON, Ohio – Eastern Kentucky jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first three innings and went on to defeat Dayton, 10-3, on Tuesday night at Time Warner Cable Stadium.
Despite the early deficit, the Flyers outscored EKU 3-2 since the bottom of the third inning as junior Ian Hundley hit his second homerun of the season past the right field fence. Hundley finished the day 2-for-4 after starting in the top of the order (second) for the first time since April 4.
Senior Brian Blasik went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and senior C.J. Gillman had a hit and two runs batted in.
In his second start of the season freshman right-handed pitcher Denton Sagerman (1-2), who entered the game on a 4 1/3 shutout-inning streak, received the loss. Sagerman allowed six runs through 12 batters faced with one strikeout.
Lefties Tommy Konrad and Matthew Miller closed out the game for Dayton on the mound. Konrad threw a season-high six innings and struck out a career-high six batters after taking to the rubber with no outs in the second inning. Miller pitched the last two inning to hold the Colonels scoreless with a strikeout.
Left-handed freshman starting pitcher Nick Bozman (2-0) earned the win on an EKU staff day after allowing two hits, no runs and striking out three in two innings pitched.
The Colonels entered Tuesday’s game as the national leader in homeruns with 59 and exited Time Warner Cable Stadium with two more. Bryan Soloman hit his 11th of the season in the first inning and Austin Grisham hit his third of the season in the sixth inning. Both were two-run homers.
Dayton increased its NCAA-leading stolen bases total to 141 after stealing six bags on Tuesday. Blasik led the way with three stolen bases and is now just four away from owning Dayton’s career stolen bases record. The Germantown, Ohio native has 59 career stolen bases, looking up to leader Michael Massa (2004-07) with 63.
UD continues its final homestand of the season with three games against UMass beginning on Thursday at 3 p.m. ET. The teams are currently in a tie for fourth place in the Atlantic 10 standings with 11-7 conference records.
