DAYTON, Ohio – Dayton baseball split a doubleheader against Fordham on Sunday at Time Warner Cable Stadium – winning the first game 11-5 and losing the second 9-8.

Dayton wins its third of four conference series this season, improving to 8-4 in league play and 17-20 overall. Fordham, hosts of the Atlantic 10 tournament later this season, moves to 15-22 and 7-5 in conference play.

Sophomore Robby Sundermen went a combined 5-for-7 with six RBI in the doubleheader to pace the Flyers offensively from the eight-spot in the batting order. Sunderman set a career-high five RBI in game one on a three-run triple and two-run RBI. After 12 conference games this season, the Cincinnati native leads UD with a .405 batting average and 17 hits.

Senior Tim Bury tossed a complete-game with seven strikeouts in Dayton’s 11-5 game one victory. In four conference starts, Bury is 3-1 with a 2.41 earned run average and 27 strikeouts.

Carrying a 4-2 deficit in the middle of the sixth inning of game one, Dayton put up five runs in the bottom half to spark an offensive streak which resulted in nine runs in the last three innings. Sunderman’s three-run triple in the sixth gave UD the go-ahead lead. Senior Mike Coughlin pinch hit in the sixth, adding to Dayton’s lead with an RBI triple. Coughlin went a combined 2-for-2 in pinch hitting situations on Sunday.

In game two, the Flyers picked up where they left off by jumping out to a 6-0 lead in the first three innings. Sunderman and junior second baseman Jared Broughton both hit two-run homers for the Flyers – Sunderman in the second inning and Broughton in the third.

The Rams began to chip away at the Flyers’ lead with three runs in the fourth, one the fifth and three again in the sixth.

Dayton held on to a 8-7 lead entering the eighth inning, until the first four Rams reached base and tied the game, 8-8. Fordham’s go-ahead run was driven in on a hit batsman with the bases loaded.

Dayton would stage a two-out rally in the bottom of the ninth. Coughlin came through with a single to right field as a pinch hitter. Another single from Sunderman put runners at the corners with two out, but resulted in the Flyers’ first one-run loss since March 13.

Senior Bobby Glover recorded a career-high four hits in game two, driving in two runs and scoring three runs.

Dayton returns to action on Wednesday evening at Miami (Ohio) in a 6 p.m. ET first pitch from Oxford. The Flyers have a bye from A-10 play next weekend and will travel to play a three-game series at Evansville.

SCHEDULE NOTE: Dayton’s originally scheduled home game with Miami on Tuesday has been canceled.
