FAIRBORN, Ohio - The University of Dayton softball team (14-21) dropped a doubleheader to the Wright State Raiders (17-20) on Monday at WSU Softball Field. Dayton lost 6-5 in game one and 5-1 in game two.
Freshman Natalie Mariano was 3-for-7 with a home run and two RBI. Sophomore Kathleen Maloof hit .400 (2-for-5). Redshirt freshman Jordan Jennings had a solo home run. Senior Lauren Nacke had an RBI.
Senior Sarah Wedel started game one. Wedel pitched 3.2 innings and allowed five earned runs. Freshman Kayla English pitched 2.2 innings of relief. English had four strikeouts and two walks while allowing one earned run. Sophomore Alysha Isaacson started game two. Isaacson had three strikeouts and allowed three earned runs in five innings of action. Junior Sydney Cicchetti pitched one inning of relief and had two strikeouts.
Wright State’s Alex Machen singled up the middle to open the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Later in the frame, Angie Clark hit a two-out, two-run triple to put the Raiders ahead 3-0.
Mariano drove a two-run blast in the top of the third inning, sending the ball sailing over the right field fence.
Wright State added two additional runs on a two-out double by Chelsea Archer in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend its lead to 5-2.
In the top of the fifth frame, Dayton’s Rachel Archer sparked the Flyer bats. Archer singled to right field, putting runners on the corners for UD. A missed attempt on a fielder’s choice during Mariano’s at-bat led to bases loaded for the Flyers. In the next plate appearance, Nacke hit a deep fly ball to right field, sacrificing home freshman Tiffany Ricks. A two-run error during Brandy Brown’s at-bat brought home two runs to tie the score at five apiece.
Wright State scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh after the leadoff hitter Kristi Boreing was walked home.
Jennings hit a bases-empty, two-out blast in the top of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead for the Flyers in game two.
With two outs and runners on the corners in the bottom of the second, Isaacson pitched her way out of a jam as the Jess Gorman grounded out to retire the side.
A base hit up the middle by Kortney Tackett drove home the game-tying run in the bottom of the third inning.
Wright State hit a two-RBI triple in the fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead over Dayton. The Raiders added two more in the bottom of the sixth, extending their lead to 5-1.
Dayton travels to Columbus, Ohio for a single game on Wednesday against the Ohio State Buckeyes at 6 p.m. The game will streamed live on the Big Ten Network’s BTN.com for a fee.
